Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

With True Detective having wrapped up, there’s a gaping “existential badass Matthew McConaughey with a ponytail” shaped hole in my life right now. Luckily, Patton Oswalt is here to fill that hole with jokes. The funnyman is a gigantic fan of the show himself, and decided to break out his best Rust Cohle impersonation to promote his upcoming Comedy Central special; Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time.

There’s a bit of a fracas brewing around Fantastic Four and no, it has nothing to do with Michael B. Jordan’s skin colour. Last week, Bleeding Cool posted a story saying that Fox was planning to scrap the currently planned reboot, and would recast, look for a replacement for director Josh Trank and take it in a new story direction. Immediately, Fox issued several denials of this, saying it’s all rumour. But here’s the thing: Bleeding Cool is saying that they spoke directly to at least two high profile filmmakers, who say that Fox offered them the gig but which they turned down.

Could it be that Fox really did want a do-over, but put those plans on hold again when none of the people on their list of replacements took the bait?

Speaking of ladies guys like looking at, Community and The LEGO Movie star Alison Brie has joined the cast of Get HardThe upcoming comedy stars Will Ferrell as a rich, cushy investment banker who gets wrongfully convicted of a crime. With 30 days of freedom left before he gets locked up, he enlists the help of the guy who washes his car (played by Kevin Hart), to help toughen him up for life behind bars. Brie would play Ferrell’s character’s fiancee.

Even though I only loved 80% of James Mangold’s The Wolverine, I’m 100% looking forward to the planned sequel. Mangold has previously stated that he’s already working on the story, but according to a tweet he sent to a fan, we can only expect to the next film after the apocalypse. X-Men: Apocalypse, that is.

Speaking of those pesky mutants, a new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past will be hitting the interwebs soon, which of course means a new animated teaser poster thingy on Instagram.

Did you contribute to the record breaking Kickstarter for the Veronica Mars movie? Are you now throwing your marshmallows out of the cot because you couldn’t get to see it like the Kickstarter promised? Well, you’re not alone. The movie hit US theatres last week, to almost universal good reviews, but it was bad news for Kickstarter contributors who had donated enough to get themselves a same-day access pass to view the movie online on the Warner Bros. Flixster app and Ultraviolet system. But both digital distribution platforms apparently weren’t up to the task, resulting in a steady stream of complaints of an unwatchable movie, prompting WB to almost immediately start issuing refunds.

The Veronica Mars movie has had a bit of a cinderella story, but this “the Prince kisses the ugly step-sister” moment has really soured the experience for some of its biggest fans.

Believe it or not, but the fact that Gareth Edwards became famous for directing a low budget movie called Monsters, is actually not the reason he was picked to make a big budget monster movie like Godzilla. No, it seems that Edwards had to pitch his ideas just like everybody else (and being a fan helped). Woulda thunk it?

“The meeting with Legendary [Pictures] went so well… that when I left I photographed their building to remember it, because I thought ‘Oh, something just happened there. I think I’m going to end up doing something with them.’ That was such a great meeting that we had together. We’re all on the same page of the movies we want to make. But then six months went by and I started working on other things, then suddenly I got an email from my Hollywood agent saying ‘call this number now.’ I went home and called the number at it was my agent and he said ‘Okay, are you sitting down?’ And I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘just sit down. Ok, so Legendary just called, and they want to know if you’d be interested in directing ‘Godzilla’? And my honest reaction was ‘holy f***.’ Then, they were saying, ‘are you a Godzilla fan?’ because I was silent for awhile. I happened to have had the re-released 1954 version out on my shelf. It was right in front of me, and I was like ‘Yeah, I’m looking at it right now,’ which they were very relieved about.“

An earthquake hit Los Angeles yesterday, and contrary to popular belief, it was actually a legit, naturally occurring earthquake, and not the world’s most ambitious bit of viral marketing to coincide with Dwayne Johnson revealing this first pic of his character in San Andreas, an upcoming thriller that sees Johnson as a Fire and Rescue worker trying to save his estranged daughter after a massive earthquake.

“Puttin’ in a lot of hard ass work and proud to play my next role… Los Angeles Fire Department Air Squadron Rescue. Shooting starts in 4 weeks. Biggest earthquake of all time hits… SAN ANDREAS. #FirstInLastOut.”

Paramount is teaming up with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes to produce a new untitled adventure thriller based on a pitch from writers Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots, The Cape, Empire) and Robbie Thompson (Supernatural, The Cape), with the option for Bay to direct. The pitch’s plot is being kept quiet, but it’s been described as “a real science adventure thriller with an undersea component.”

I imagine this pitch went something like “Explosions under water look really cool. Let’s make a movie about that. Now who do we know that can explode stuff real good?!”

I’d like to think that I have good poker face, but clearly mine is nothing when compared to comedians on the set of a funny movie, who probably have to stop themselves from cracking up all the time. Except, sometimes they don’t. And that’s when you get hilarious vids like this Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues gag reel.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
