Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • To kick off today, we unfortunately have some gloomy news. Nearly 4 months after being involved in a heavy car accident, actor/comedian Tracy Morgan is apparently still struggling to recover from the injuries he sustained in the collision, including a traumatic brain injury. I may not have been the biggest of Morgan’s fans (although his “Rocket Dog” sketch is still one of my favourite things in SNL history), but it is tragic to see a talented performer laid low like this.
  • And now to get out of that glum mood the previous story just put in, here are two videos showing off He-Man and Skeletor’s best respective one-liners and insults from the 80’s cartoon show, because why wouldn’t I post videos showing off He-Man and Skeletor’s best respective one-liners and insults from the 80’s cartoon show?!

  • Poster of the day: The Iron Giant

  • Acclaimed writer Aaron Sorkin will soon get the opportunity to dissect another tech pioneer in Danny Boyle’s still untitled Steve Jobs biopic, much like he did with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. And while the two films have that thematic similarity, the Jobs film will differ slightly in that it won’t just be all about the late Apple boss, but rather also focus on a surprise inclusion: his daughter.

“Both films are much more about the people than the technology they invented. With The Social Network, I was interested in the psychology of the world’s most successful social networking system being invented by the world’s most anti-social guy. And in the case of Steve Jobs, it’s the relationships he had – particularly with his daughter, Lisa – that drew me to it.”

“She didn’t participate in Walter Isaacson’s book, because her father was alive at the time, and she didn’t want to alienate either of her parents, so I was very grateful that she was willing to spend time with me. She is the heroine of the movie.”

“[There will still be quite a lot of focus on Jobs himself though]: It’s a 181-page script, about 100 of it is that one character,”

  • Did you just go “Huh?” when all that science-y gobbledygook about fifth-dimensional beings and travelling in 4-dimensions were thrown at you in Interstellar? Well, then let acclaimed astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson explain it to you.

  • And speaking of Interstellar, at some point during the end of the second act, let’s just say – to steer away from spoilers – that SOMEBODY shows up unexpectedly. There’s not much info given on what this somebody has been up to though… Until now, as writer/director Chris Nolan himself has gone and penned a comic that fills in this massive gap in a key part of the narrative, which you can read in full right now.
  • Director Patty Jenkins made a big splash with her 2003 feature film debut flick Monster – which scored Charlize Theron an Oscar for her, well, monstrous turn – but since then has yet to step behind the camera again on a movie set. Yes, she’s been busy in the TV world, even picking up an Emmy nod along the way, but it’s been over a decade since she made another movie. But it looks like that is finally going to change as she’s signed on to direct Jackpot, an adaptation of Jo “Headhunters” Nesbo’s crime novel, which was already adapted as a Norwegian action-comedy in 2011.

The story follows “four men with shady pasts who win big in a sports pool. When it comes to dividing the winnings, however, things escalate to lethal proportions.”

  • You may think that Vin Diesel had the easiest job by far in Guardians of the Galaxy as he essentially just had to memorize three words: “I am Groot”. In actuality though, Diesel had to go through hours of dialogue as he needed to record the now-iconic line in a bunch of different languages. Here are fifteen of those translations:

  • “Oi, guv’nor. How about a cuppa tea for me mum then?” If you’re American, I’m guessing that my little British impersonation over there is probably as unintelligible to you as if were to speak a lost Inca language. At least that’s what I’m guessing based on the fact that US television networks still seem to be under the opinion that airing a British TV series on US television would just end up with a bunch of Yanks not knowing what the hell is going on. It’s the only reason I can think of why American remakes of British TV shows happen. We recently saw David Tennant have to put on an American twang to star in a remake of the critically acclaimed Broadchurch (which Tennant actually starred in originally); just the latest in a string of TV series being transported across the pond.

And now comes word that Idris Elba’s vastly popular and award-winning Luther is also getting the US remake treatment, only he’s not as lucky as his fellow countryman as Elba isn’t going to be involved with it at all. That’s like doing a Mr Bean movie and then not casting Rowan Atkinson.

  • The Little Mermaid ain’t so little anymore as today marks the 25th anniversary of Disney’s classic tale about how the only way a girl can find true happiness is to drastically change her physical appearance to please a man. And what better way to honour that movie, than to make fun of it with an Honest Trailer?

  1. lol. Skeletor and He-Man actually had some good lines. Although Skeletor says boob a lot. Know your audience.
