Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • And the war of the roses geeks continues! Since starting productions on their respective movies, Star Wars: Episode VII director JJ Abrams and Batman v Superman helmer Zack Snyder have been engaged in a hilarious bout of back and forth social media oneupmanship through parodies of each other’s movies. Earlier in the week, after incorrect reports surfaced that the new Batmobile had been stolen from the set of BvS, Snyder released a hilarious photo showing the Gotham City Police Department arresting a Stormtrooper for trying to steel Bats’ wheels. It was damn funny and brilliantly time, but I think Abrams may just have taken an unassailable lead in this race.

The director unveiled this video yesterday, giving fans the first look at incredibly detailed surface of the newly constructed Millennium Falcon being used in Episode VII, and while that on its own would already be enough to have fanboys like me foaming at the mouth, there’s a little surprise in the video that will leave you batty.

  • In a bout of crazy accurate casting, Audrey Plaza, best known for her turn as apathetic, deadpan council worker April Ludgate in Parks & Recreation, has been tapped to voice the titular feline in the Grumpy Cat movie, titled Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. Yes, they’re making a movie about Grumpy Cat. I’m sure he’s just as unhappy about it as you are.

  • A countryside estate in 19th Century England? A strong willed women looking for love and independence? Undead creatures created by a strange plague? Matt Smith? You would swear that I’d just described a missing episode of Doctor Who, but it’s actually just the long-in-development feature film adaptation of Jane Austen parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which has now landed the services of the former Doctor in one of the lead roles. Smith will play “Mr. Collins, a parson who is on the lookout for a wife” and who ends up proposing to the story’s heroine Liz Bennett, played by Lily James.

  • Liam Neeson has become like an Irish accented version of the Spanish Flu, just wiping out whole groups of people all over the world. Using that particular set of skills of his, he has been wiping out whole groups of people all over the world, as this Liam Neeson Kill Map shows you.

  • One of the main reasons why I actually have faith in the new Star Wars movies is because the people that are busy making them now are a group of flannel loving neckbeards who have lost touch with their audience, but rather these are the fanboys who grew up loving the original movies just like I did, and now they get to play in that universe. One such person is lifelong fan Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick, Breaking Bad) who will is currently busy living out his Star Wars dreams as he gets ready to take over writing/directing duties from JJ Abrams (another Star Wars fanboy, by the way) on Episodes VII and IX.

“I’m just starting into it, but so far it’s the most fun I’ve ever had writing. It’s just joyous. The first movies I was making in my head were part of this world, so part of it is a direct connection – it’s almost like an automatic jacking-in into childhood in a weird way.”

“I’m figuring it out as I go. I’m dancing on top of the avalanche a little bit. But it’s a challenge of remembering what inspires you about the original films, but I think you can probably go to the wrong place by feeling too responsible to it. You have to keep your head loose enough to tell a story you actually care about.”

“[Lucasfilm President] Kathleen [Kennedy] and her whole creative team have been so insistent on all the filmmakers they’ve been hiring for these new movies: ‘We want you to take it and turn it into something that you really care about.’ And we’ll see how the process plays out. Because that just seems like their attitude towards it. It’s really exciting actually.”

  • Okay, hands up everybody that has been secretly hoping for some kind of apocalypse to befall the world, just so that you can finally become the badass you’ve always believed yourself to be. C’mon, don’t feel guilty. We’ve all done it. Especially if you’re a comic book reading, hardcore gamer, because, let’s face it, we would pwn those zombie noobs! rofl! gg

  • When Expendables 3 barely made a ding at the box office with its recent debut, a large portion of the blame for its non-performance was attributed to the fact that a crap load of people (180 000 in the first 24 hours) had downloaded a leaked copy of the movie just two weeks earlier. And if you were one of those scurvy pirates who illegally downloaded The Expendables 3, then I might suggest that you take up the offer of Desmond Dube and his lawyer friends on those infomercials real soon, as producer Avi Lerner and production studio Millenium Films has revealed their intention to take legal action against all those people, whose illegal actions resulted in Millenium essentially getting hit with a $250 million loss.

“That was 10 million people who stole the movie,. We want to go after those 10 million people.”

“[It is] not right to steal. I want to protect our property and the thousands of people who made our movie.”

  • If it were up to me, this video on Everything Wrong With Taken 2 would have been way shorter. Waaaaaaaaaaay shorter. And that’s because it would simply have said, that “Problem 1: They made a Taken 2. The end.” But that doesn’t make for a very entertaining video, which is you guys are lucky that the folks at CinemaSins put a whole lot more time and effort into their video.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
