Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • So how many times have you watched the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer yet? And, most importantly, did you shed a manly tear of nostalgia at the end when Han and Chewie showed up? Or maybe you even bawled your eyes out like astronaut Matthew McConaughey.

In case you didn’t realize it, that’s actually footage from Interstellar that’s been very cleverly edited. The internet is amazing.

  • Everybody wants to work with Marvel lately. Hell, even Robert Redford, the very opposite of the type of actor you would ever associate with a superhero movie, called them asking for a part in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And now you Marvel can add another unexpected Oscar winning name to their rolodex as Twelve Years A Slave scribe John Ridley is reportedly developing a new TV series for them. What that series is unknown, but it’s reported that it “nvolves reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property for ABC” which probably makes it likely that he’s working on the recently announced Agents of SHIELD spinoff.
  • Posters of the day: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • It looks like BBC’s planned drama around the development of mega-smash hit and occasionally controversial video game franchise Grand Theft Auto has found it’s “villain”, so to speak. Bill Paxton has signed on to play Jack Thompson, an activist attorney in the US who became infamous for publicly vilifying and attacking the franchise and other similar games by claiming them to be the cause of several of violent crimes. The super-conservative Thompson would eventually be disbarred himself though for “unorthodox methods” and “inappropriate behaviour” in trying to prove his claims.

Paxton will be starring opposite Daniel Radcliffe as Sam Houser, the co-founder of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games, and if he doesn’t tell him at some point during the movie that “It’s game over, man”,  I will be gravely disappointed.

  • Bonus posters of the day: Jurassic World
  • Orphan Black‘s third season kicked off on Saturday night, meaning that we can finally have some Tatiana Maslany in our lives again! Of course not forgetting her awesome co-stars Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany, and of course the brilliant occasional guest star Tatiana Maslany! Clones are fun! And you can see all of them talk about themselves and each other and all those other new male clones in this cool little interview over at Collider.
  • How many projectionists does it take to change an IMAX lightbulb? This is not the start of a really bad joke.

  • Despite it’s ever-increasing disregard for the laws of physics, you would be surprised to learn just how many of the Fast & Furious franchise’s stunts were not digital effects but actually done for real. Well, actually you wouldn’t be surprised at all if you read Cracked’s article on 4 Insane Fast And The Furious Stunts That Weren’t CGI.
  • Carrie Fisher is awesome. This is a fact. And if you ever had any doubts about this, then you merely have to check out these utterly hilarious highlights from her Star Wars Celebration panel to be dissuaded of your doubting ways. Also, somebody needs to make a “I Want To Force You” T-Shirt [deleted for being too rapey].
  • Maybe if Waterworld had trailers cut like Mad Max: Fury Road then maybe more people would have seen it and it wouldn’t have been a box office disaster and I wouldn’t need to feel embarrassed in public every time I admit how much I love that damn movie.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
