Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Let’s kick off today’s Extras the way you should kick off every morning: With eggs and bacon. Kevin Bacon, that is.

  • In news that should surprise nobody that hasn’t had a completely irrational reaction to the Fantastic Four reboot, and actually just thought about it logically for a second, the team will probably end up wearing the traditional comic book costumes before the end of the movie. That’s according to star Miles Teller, who says that the jumpsuit style “costumes” you see in the trailer are not the end product.
“These are the beta versions of the costumes, which is great […] But, yeah it would be very odd if the Fantastic Four didn’t don the traditional costumes. You’ve got to. There is some servicing there. You’ve got to give that to the fans. That’s what it’s all about.”
  • Poster of the day: Die Hard

  • You know that high-pitched, nails on a chalkboard screech that the Ringwraiths do in Lord of the Rings? Yeah, that’s actually just the sound of plastic cups being scraped together. For real. You can learn all about it and more in Empire’s article on The Secrets Behind 44 Classic Cinema Sound Effects.

“Before I worked in show business, I worked in the demolition business. And even after I made it in Hollywood, I kept on building things… We’re hooking up homeowners who need help with their renovations. I’m tired of all this jibber jabber – we’re out here getting things done, working hard, demolishing the old and rebuilding the new.”

  • Rocket Raccoon was not only an incredible character in Guardians of the Galaxy because of his cocky veneer hiding a tragic backstory, but because he’s a talking raccoon that you totally believe has a cocky veneer to hide his tragic backstory! Director James Gunn and co simply did an amazing job in realizing this character on-screen believably. And here’s a video showing just how they did it.

  • And now for the opposite end of the spectrum. Because while Disney/Marvel can make you believe in a raccoon, the animators at Disney/Pixar can only draw one type of female face. This discovery was made by the Every Flavoured Bean Tumblr when they traced the jaw line and nose of both male and female characters from Disney animated movies of the last few years and compared the results. And while the guys have all different shapes and sizes, things look strangely uniform over on the ladies’ side.

  • And now for some sad news. We’ve all known it deep down inside, but I guess it’s time to face facts: There isn’t going to be a Dredd sequel, no matter how many DVD’s we buy or petitions we sign. According to writer Alex Garland, it’s time to just give up on the dream now.

“There isn’t, as far as I can tell, going to be a ‘Dredd’ sequel. The basic mechanics of film financing say that if you make a film that loses a ton of money, you’re not going to get a sequel. And that’s basically what happened. And I understand and appreciate the support the film has had, and the campaigns that have existed for it, and it’s really genuinely gratifying — I love it in all respects except one, which is when I hear about people buying copies of the DVD in order to boost sales and to change the figures. And what I want to say to them is, ‘Don’t do that. Keep your money.’ Because the people that are making the decisions are much colder and harder than that. And the graphs they’re looking at are not really going to be sufficiently dented by that.”

Sigh. Stupid real world limitations!

  • Movie visual effects have come a damn long way (just scroll up to that Rocket Raccoon vid above to see what I mean), and today CineFix is taking a look at the 10 best VFX innovations of this century.

  • Looks like Annapurna Pictures have themselves a bad batch, that’s also a really freaking good batch? Confused? Allow me to explain: Producing wunderkind Megan Ellis’ Annapurna Pictures are developing a new dystopian drama titled Bad Batch about “a love story set in a Texas wasteland”, which is to be directed by recent breakout filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour who has been racking up the film festival praise and awards with her debut hit, the “Iranian vampire spaghetti western” A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Bad Batch previously had Jason Momoa attached to it, and now he’ll be joined by Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey, Suki Waterhouse and Diego Luna.

According to The Playlist, the movie will actually be set in a community of cannibals who apparently have a thing for fancy names, as Momoa will play Miami Man, Reeves will be The Dream, Carrey will be the Hermit and Waterhouse and Luna, who clearly didn’t get the “funny name”memo, will play Arlen and Jimmy, respectively. Both Momoa and Reeves are red hot draws rights now (thanks to Momoa being cast as Aquaman, and Reeves coming off the bad-ass John Wick), while Carrey has been known to put in really good work in messed up dramas, so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

  • With The Sound of Music celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Onion’s Peter Rosenthal takes a look back at the joyful classic… which takes its inspiration from unspeakable human atrocities and the deaths of millions. Yes, you read that right.
