Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Sound effects. They’re often overlooked, but can make the biggest difference to a story. Like, say, a story involving Batman and Robin.

  • Legendary comic scribe Chris Claremont is the man responsible for the works on which The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past. When asked about his feelings on the latter, he revealed that unfortunately he hadn’t seen the full film yet, as he wasn’t invited to a pre-screening, but the little he’s been exposed to he thinks Fox totally got right. A movie he has seen though was Amazing Spider-Man 2 and unfortunately he doesn’t hold it in the same regard.

“The problem with superhero movies is you hope you get The Avengers, but sometimes the reality is you get Spidey 2.2. I call it Spidey 2.2 because if you call it Spider-Man 2 people go, ‘Wait, do you mean the Spider-Man with Alfred Molina because that one was really good, you know?’ Yes, it was really good because it was directed by Sam Raimi who is really good. Sam foolishly had this attitude with Sony where he said ‘How about for the third movie we has LESS characters!’ and Sony was like ‘NOOOOO! WE WANT MORE CHARACTERS! 3 CHARACTERS IN THE THIRD, 4 IN THE FOURTH AND 5 IN THE FIFTH!’ Well, oddly enough, this is the fifth movie and what do we have? Sinster Six! Yes, six characters cause they can’t count. I’m making fun of Spidey because I can and because the X-Men movie hasn’t come out yet!”

  • Yes, yes, I know. ANOTHER Star Wars rumour. Meh, right? Well this one has nothing to do with secret castings and directors and characters with silly names in far off places. Unless you find Drew Struzan’s name entertaining, and think that California is on the other side of the world. The much revered artist retired in 2008, after spending the last 40 years creating posters and book covers to some of your most favourite movies like Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, Back to the Future, Rambo, The Goonies, etc. The gig that really made his name though was Star Wars, and it looks like the call of Lucasfilm’s sci-fi epic is proving too strong again, as its been reported that director JJ Abrams has allegedly asked Struzan to dust off his brushes again to return to art duties on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII.

Abrams and co have said several times that they want to lean more towards the original trilogy’s style and tone, and bringing Struzan in is certainly a step in that direction.

  • My favourite Harry Potter film? Easy: Prisoner of Azkaban. A lot of my love for that film comes from the direction of Alfonso Cuaron, you know the guy that just won an Oscar directing the best movie released last year. And it looks like the Gravity helmer might be getting magical again. According to ex-Deadline runner Nikke Finke, Cuaron is apparently in “deep talks” with Warner Bros to direct Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Harry Potter spinoff being penned by original author JK Rowling herself.

I can’t be the only one hoping for a single-take sequence where some quidditch player is knocked off his/her broom while in full flight, and ends up being flung off into depths of space, right?

  • I don’t know about you guys, but when I have kids one day, I’m never letting them watch Toy Story. I mean, the idea that toys come alive while you’re not watching? That’s pure horror story material, if you ask me!

  • I will happily stomp right through a city or two to get this t-shirt. Luckily it’s only $12, so Cape Town can sleep easy tonight.

  • When you think of Colin Firth, you think of Renee Zellweger’s oversized granny panties and flopping about with Hugh Grant in a fountain. You definitely don’t think of him as an action hero, but that’s exactly what he will be in The Secret Service, Matthew “First Class” Vaughn’s adaptation of his and Mark Millar’s comic of the same name. The film, a throwback to classic spy movies according to Vaughn, will see Firth as a top secret agent called Kingsman who has to take a youngster under his wing, and train him in the art of espionage. A role that saw Firth have to do lots of training of his own, as the Bridget Jones actor explained to EW.

“I was afraid it was ridiculous. I think what’s brilliant about Matthew is that he takes people’s expectations and likes to mess with them. When we first met the year before, he said, “One of the reasons I’m casting you is because you’re probably the last person anyone could imagine kicking people and kicking off the villains.” And that was the surprise he wanted to pull. And he said, by the way, “You’re going to have to do it. Are you up to it?” That’s one of the reasons he got me so early, to start training. He said, “You’re going to hate me by the end of it,” and sure enough, the Jackie Chan training team comes to my house and they get to work on me. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed myself so much in my life. I realized that I’d made assumptions about myself that meant I had probably been neglecting something that I might have enjoyed for years if I’d got to it earlier.”

  • Blade is one badass motherf#$%er! He has all the strength, speed, endurance and agility of being a vampire with none of their weaknesses. Plus, he has that razor-blade security thing on his sword for when anybody else tries to use it, which just puts a gorilla lock to shame. He’s killed blood gods, evolved vampires and even the very first vampire. But although he can do all of this, he really, really sucks at metaphors.
