Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • James Garner, veteran movie star of such classics as Maverick (the original TV series and Mel Gibson’s reboot), Murphy’s Romance and The Rockford Files has passed away. The 86-year old actor, who was last seen on screen in 2006’s The Ultimate Gift, passed away on Saturday night. No cause of death has yet been released. Before establishing himself as Emmy Award winning and Oscar nominated leading man in a career that spanned more than 50 years, Garner had actually been a war hero, earning two Purple Hearts in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, with whom he has been married for 58 years, and his two daughters.
  • And now for some totally not surprising in any way whatsoever news: Marvel plan to release a bunch of movies between now and 2019. The comic book movie film studio have added five new scheduled release dates to their calendar of upcoming movies, to go along with th July 8, 2016 and May 5, 2017 dates they already had pencilled in. The new dates are July 28, 2017, November 3, 2017, July 6, 2018, November 2, 2018 and May 3, 2019. You’ll note that no clues have been given as to exactly which movies will be taking those spots, though it would be a fairly educated guess that Doctor Strange will be dropping on July 8, 2016.
  • Featurettes on the half-shell! Movie power!……… Sorry, that was lame. To take your mind off it, check out this 17-minute long behind the scenes clip showing of just how the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was made, including a lengthy look at that snow chase scene glimpsed in the trailers.

  • Don’t worry, Chicken Little. The sky won’t be falling for much longer (by the way, Chicken Little is what we call Nick around here). TNT have announced that their hit sci-fi drama Falling Skies has been renewed for a fifth and final season. What’s interesting about this news, is that apparently it was the producers’ request for this to be the final season as they are intentionally wrapping up the story they wanted to tell. While I’ve had my issues with the show, I can definitely applaud them for that and not just doing to typical thing of milking the show until there’s no redeeming factors left at all. And that’s what could have happened since Falling Skies is a ratings giant for the network.

You would think that losing such a big hit, may be a problem, but TNT have another smash on their hands in the Michael Bay produced The Last Ship, which the network has also announced has already been picked up for a second season despite just being 4 episodes into it’s debut stint.

  • Are you one of those people that still haven’t upgraded to a DVD player and are instead holding steadfast to your VHS machine? Well, here’s some good motivation to get rid of it ASAP:  The Ring 3 has found a director in Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez, which means that the chances of you dying via haunted video cassette tape just went up by like a 1000%.
  • Flash may have spun out of Arrow, but CW’s pair of superhero dramas will be spinning right back toward each other. It’s been confirmed that the 8th episode of Flash and Arrow‘s upcoming respective first and third seasons will be a two-hour crossover event. Also the fourth episodes will see Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) moving over from Arrow to Flash.

On top of that bit of news comes the announcement that Prison Break star Wentworth Miller has been cast as Captain Cold, the leader of the sorta-villainous Rogues and one of Flash’s greatest enemies. Pro-tip to the Flash: If you catch him, make sure you check him for tattoos before you lock him up.

  • When it comes to Disney princesses, everybody knows that Thor is the best. But for the rest of them, they’re going to have to fight it out. With automatic weapons.

  • While I am quite a fan of the new Batsuit worn by Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman: Attack of The Stupid Movie Title, there’s one part of it that leaves me a little disappointed. See, I am quite the fan of the yellow, oval chest symbol used by Michael Keaton’s Batman in the original Tim Burton movies, and was hoping it would make a return. At this point, some of you are probably shaking your heads at me, wondering how the hell I could like that garish piece of canary poop. And that’s okay, because with Batman having been around since 1939 in one form or another, there are plenty of Bat symbols to go around for everybody to have their own favourite.

  • If you’re still pissed that you won’t be able to see Edgar Wright’s vision for Ant-Man any more, then I have some good news:  You will be able to see Edgar Wright’s vision for Ant-Man. Sort of. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige explained that although Wright has been replaced by Peyton Reed in the director’s chair, they’re not about to throw out the 8 years of work – which includes storyboarding most of the movie – that the former director had been doing.

“…there are new elements in the movie obviously, now, that [Wright] was not involved in. But there are some segments that are awesome and will be brought to life in some incarnation. Peyton [Reed] certainly has all that material and is a talented enough and a secure enough guy to notice if something is really cool and go “No reason to change that, that’s great.” Or if he’s got his own spin on something to go and adapt it from there. “

  • Housewives rejoice! Finally a movie targeted squarely at your demographic! Sandra Bullock and director Tate “The Help” Taylor are planning to adapt Tupperware Unsealed, Bob Kealing’s biopic on Brownie Wise, the lady who pioneered the idea of Tupperware parties and in the process created a booming industry. Wise was a marketing genius and savvy businesswoman who put Tupperware on the map in the 1950’s, but even despite this still butted heads constantly with company founder Earl Tupper after she became a bit of a celebrity. In the end she was forced out of the company with no stock and only one year’s salary of $30 000, with all references to her removed from the company’s literature.
  • And to close off today we leave you with this mindblowing bit of behind the scenes movie magic. Did I say mindblowing? I meant headblowing!
