Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • The Star Wars: Force for Change campaign has been created by Disney, Lucasfilm and Bad Robot to do their bit in combating several global issues, with their first project being to raise funds and awareness for UNICEF’s Innovation Labs, and all the good work they do for kids around the world. And as a reward for contributing, some lucky person will get to visit the Star Wars: Episode VII set and even appear in the movie, among other prizes.

Director JJ Abrams has released a new video with an update on the campaign, and anew prize that can be won, but the big deal from this clip is of course what’s standing directly behind him. That right there is a life-size Z-95 Headhunter (if you said it’s an X-Wing, then please hand in your fanboy badge and exit stage left, thank you), once again showing off the film’s reliance of practical effects and props, rather than the CGI-overload of George Lucas’ prequel trilogy.

“We’re going for a kind of very gritty, 1970s New York feel for the show. We love the idea of beauty in the decay of the city and Hell’s Kitchen being a place that is both horrible and beautiful at the same time. That’s why Matt Murdock loves it and wants to protect it.”

1970’s? Very gritty? Oh boy, Joe Carnahan’s ears must be burning right about now.

  • So remember those rumours about Guardians of the Galaxy perhaps setting up the long asked-for Planet Hulk movie? Yeah, those are total bovine feces according to director James Gunn.

“..it is absolute, 100% bullshit. It feels like a great relief to finally say this after all the dumb stuff on the Internet. There’s not going to be a ‘Planet Hulk’ movie, there was never going to be a ‘Planet Hulk’ movie, there was never a plan for the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy – I wouldn’t want the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy! And it’s all a bunch of complete bullshit.”

“The whole thing is, there’s Sakaraan [the race featured heavily in the Planet Hulk comic story] in the movie. And the reason there’s Sakaraan in the movie is because there aren’t that many alien races in the Marvel Universe, and of those prominent alien races, such as the Kree and the Skrull, I have some very specific ideas for where those races go.”

“The reason we picked the Sakaraan is because we don’t own Badoon. In the script it originally said Badoon. So you can blame search and replace for changing Badoon to Sakaaran and leading to the whole ‘Planet Hulk’ conspiracy.”

And that’s that.

  • As if Robert Downey Jr.’s life could actually get any better, Forbes has confirmed that he is officially once again the highest paid actor in Hollywood. By a LOOOONG way. He now has so much cash in the back, that he’s just a high-tech suit away from being Tony Stark for real.
  • I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Egypt, and if there’s one thing I definitely noticed, it was that locals tended to not look and sound Australian or English. Some other folks have noticed this too, which is why they’re calling for a boycott of Ridley Scott’s upcoming Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, which sees the UK born Christian Bale as Moses and the Aussie Joel Edgerton as Pharaoh Ramses. Exodus: Gods and Kings follows Noah as the second big biblical attraction of recent times to draw ire from the public for telling stories set in Africa and the Middle East, using mostly Caucasian actors.
  • I’m not going to lie, I would much rather have preferred to see this adaptation of World War Z.

  • Move over Lady Sif, there’s a different type of warrior princess joining Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. next season. Xena and Battlestar Galactica star Lucy Lawless has joined the cast of Marvel’s show, but her role is still being kept under wraps for now. Whomever she plays, I just hope there’s a scene where she screeches like a warbling banshee as she backflips onto a horse.
  • This is what the line to get into San Diego Comic-Con looked like in 1983. I have a feeling that things will look a little different this weekend.

  • So the comic book geek corner of the internet nearly exploded last week when it was revealed that the new Fantastic Four movie would have nothing to do with the comics. This was then of course corrected the next day to actually be that the new Fantastic Four movie wouldn’t only be focusing on any one comic, but all of them. Whether you believe this quick about-face or not, I think we can all agree to be happy about one thing: At least this new Fantastic Four movie will have nothing to do with the old Fantastic Four movie.
