Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We currently live in a world where the power of visual effects allows us to realistically create/destroy just about anything we can imagine (a fact that Michael Bay’s career is eternally grateful for). But that wasn’t always the case. No, we’ve come a very long way from a man flinging a giant cardboard bullet into a fake, wooden moon. Let me show you just how far:

  • With his work on The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, David S. Goyer is WB’s go-to guy for their DC Comics properties. And now he is also the go-to guy for sexist and misogynistic ideas about immensely popular female comic book characters. While chatting about comic book movies on the Scriptnotes Podcast (via The Escapist Magazine), the conversation turned to cult favourite Marvel heroine She-Hulk aka Jen Walters, the lawyer cousin of Bruce Banner, who inherited his Hulky powers when he gave her a blood transfusion to save her life. The character, created by Stan Lee and Sal Buscema, has had a massive following for decades and been acclaimed for her “strong woman” motif and often breaking the fourth wall to point out and ridicule the cheesecake exploitation of most female comic book characters.

Yeah, Goyer doesn’t see it that way, as he went on to shame the character as “a green porn star”, claiming that she was only created by Marvel to give fans “a chick you could f*** if you were Hulk, you know what I’m saying?”. He then took it even further, wondering if it was a man who actually created the character, proving once again that this comics guy doesn’t actually know that much about comics. Needless to say, several websites, comic book writers, and industry folk have slammed him hard for his statements.

So yes, you know have a reason to dislike Goyer other than just the stupid plot points in Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises.

  • If you’ve seen Godzilla – and you really should – then you just have to head over to this very insightful chat between Empire and director Gareth Edwards, where he reveals 7 Godzilla secrets.
  • You may know that Liam Neeson is the villainous cowboy in Seth McFarlane’s upcoming hilarious looking comedy-western A Million Ways To Die In The West, but what you probably don’t know is that the role actually came from a Family Guy joke.

  • And because you know that secretly you’ve been wanting one of these forever, I present to you The Nicolas Cage Matrix!

For the record, Skiptrace will see Chan teaming up with Fan Bingbing (Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past) for the action comedy. Chan plays “a Hong Kong detective tracking a crime boss who teams up with a mouthy American gambler on the run from his creditors. Bingbing portrays the niece of Chan’s character, who gets into trouble with a crime syndicate.”

  • So you desperately want to stop being the guy who can’t join in all the fun Monday morning conversations about dragons and incest, because you’ve never seen Game of Thrones, but you just don’t have the time to catch up on 3.5 seasons? Then here, allow Peter Dinklage to succinctly summarize it all in under 45 seconds.

  • Just in case you thought the world would stop making you void your bowels in fear of horrific clown-spider monster things, then I have some bad news for you. Warner Bros has confirmed that their long in development feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s It, is still on track, but will be released by WB’s New Line division who will be handling all of the studio’s horror output from now onwards. What’s more, the plan is to now release the film in two parts, the first focusing on the main cast when they’re children, and the second on when they’re adults. Cary Fukunaga, who just came off the stellar run of directing the first season of HBO’s True Detective, is still attached to helm both films.
  • Like I said up top, modern VFX allow us to do almost anything today. And with level of tools readily available, it allows smaller filmmakers to churn out the type of material that rivals what only the big studios used to be capable of doing. Case in point, this simply fantastic sci-fi short film, Mis-Drop, by Ferand Peek. Making use of  just the “footage” from the head-mounted camera of  a futuristic soldier along with the reflections off his helmet, Peek does in a few minutes what most movies fail to do in hours. If you have 13 minutes to spare, then you should definitely watch this. And if you don’t have 13 minutes to spare, then make time and watch this anyway!

300 years in the future, a forensic accountant reviews the video stream from one mercenary’s drop-pod which has been damaged during the initial stages of a colonial invasion.
