Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!
- Comic books are colourful. But thanks to some Fox studio executive’s leather fetish when X-Men was being made, it was apparently thought that comic book movies couldn’t be (I’m still waiting on that yellow Wolverine costume, damn it!). While a lot of comic book movies have now started to realize this is really silly, the DC movies are still trying to mute their characters a bit using filters and toned down colours on the costumes. I understand they want to be different, but just have a look at this coloured up version of Man of Steel and tell me that that isn’t better.
- As if it wasn’t bad enough that Adam Sandler’s movies were offensive just for being so bad, now he’s gone and made them racially offensive as well. Reportedly, several Native American cast members of Sandler’s upcoming comedy western Ridiculous Six have walked off the set due to “‘repeated insults’ to Native American women and elders and ‘grossly misrepresented’ Apache culture. The actors especially took issue with some of the characters’ names, which included ‘Beaver’s Breath’ and ‘No Bra,’ and a scene that had an Apache woman ‘squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe.'”
Yep, that sounds about right for an Adam Sandler comedy.
- Besides for the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in the lead, we haven’t heard much from Doctor Strange. But according to a new rumour, we may just be hearing/seeing him a bit earlier than expected.

- OH LERDY LERD! Tyler Perry will be in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel, as he has been cast to play Baxter Stockman, who is surprisingly not a cranky old black woman. You may remember him from the classic cartoon as the inventor of the turtle hunting Mousers. Interestingly, Stockman was originally African-American in the original comic, but was then made white in the cartoon, and now he’s getting his ethnicity back.
- Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is known for writing hard-hitting, morally complex, multi-layered stories that boast realistically flawed characters who occasionally repulse you as much as they attract you. So of course he has written a brand new Jack and the Beanstalk movie for Disney. Of course.
- Chris Pratt may know how to train velociraptors, but that doesn’t mean that he knows dinosaurs better than a little boy.
- Dates! I don’t like eating them and Darryn never goes on them. And now here’s a third type: movie release dates! Specifically, changed movie release dates from Universal Pictures. During their CinemaCon presentation the studio unveiled that Warcraft has been bumped to the summer blockbuster season big leagues, from March 11, 2016, to June 10, 2016. Pacific Rim 2 moves from April 7, 2017 to August 4, 2017, while The Mummy, the first real installment in Universal’s shared monster movie universe, is being delayed all the way from June 24, 2016, to March 24, 2017. This has had a knock-on effect for their second, still untitled monster movie, which will now have to jump back from April 21, 2017, to March 30, 2018.
- At Fox’s CinemaCon presentation, the studio showed off footage for a number of their films, including two of our most anticipated releases of the year: Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant and Ridley Scott’s The Martian. And by the sounds of things, those two movies are going to insanely good. Footage was also shown for Hitman: Agent 47, Victor Frankenstein, Peanuts and The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials.

- Marvel is known for throwing Easter Eggs in their movies, but the greatest of them all may have just been revealed. And it doesn’t even have anything to do with Marvel. I’ll let Kevin Feige explain it, along with video evidence.
“So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.”
