Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • When James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender were cast as the younger versions of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen’s Professor X and Magneto respectively in X-Men: First Class, a decision was made that the younger actors wouldn’t try to do impersonations of their older counterparts, because they would rather talk and act like what they felt these younger versions could have been like. Well, at least that was the official version of the story.

Also, if you want more examples of McAvoy and Fassbender’s brilliant bromance, then you would do well to click these red words.

  • Tom Cruise’s latest sci-fi blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow is busy picking up some seriously good reviews at the moment. The film boast a bit of a complex story and combined with the fact that the last time director Doug Liman did this kind of big budget sci-fi action movie, it didn’t turn out too good, you can certainly say that it was a bit of a risky gamble for Warner Bros, something which Liman applauds.

“Most studios aren’t making big, original movies. When you look at what’s coming out this summer, they’re all sequels, they’re all based on toys.”

Erwin Stoff, the film’s producer then added:

“There are not that many [films] that aren’t based on some property or some franchise that already comes with its own built-in audience. I think it’s a really hard, risky thing to do today.”

This is the part where I then jump in and point out that this “original” movie is apparently a very accurate adaptation of a 10-year old novel.

  • Looks like Will Smith isn’t so brilliant after all, and no I’m not referring to reviews After Earth. The Starting To Get a Bit Stale Prince has reportedly pulled out of the lead role in Brilliance, in which he would have co-starred with Noomi Rapace, due to a scheduling conflict with another movie, Grifter. The movie, an adaptation of Marcus Sakey’s novel of the same name, is set in a world where 1% of the population are born as “brilliants”, savants with special abilities, and would have seen Smith as a “brilliant” federal agent on the hunt for another “brilliant” terrorist who intends to kick off a civil war.
  • Looks like there’s more than just ancient alien hula hoops found in Egypt on the cards when it comes to movie reboots today. Deadline is reporting that Joe Gazzam has been tapped by producer Neal Moritz to pen a new remake of 1993 Sylvester Stallone actioner CliffhangerContrary to popular belief, that movie was not about lynching an ex 5FM radio DJ, but instead saw Sly as a disillusioned climber forced by a criminal John Lithgow into helping his crew find some loot that they lost in the mountains. This remake is still in the very early stages, with no green-light in place yet, nor any indication as to how faithful Gazzam’s script will be to the original.
  • Speaking of reboots and the like (and this definitely falls into the “and the like” category), some first set pics from Terminator: Genesis has popped up online, giving us our first look at Arnold Schwarzenegger as the now older T-800 Terminator (they can age since the flesh on outside is normal human), Emilia Clarke as the young Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese. Darryn is convinced that the other man in the picture is Peter Capaldi’s Doctor from Doctor Who, who has probably shown up to fix all the wibbly wobbly timey wimey shenanigans the new move will be up to, to revisit scenes from the first film and setting up a new timeline
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier director Joe and Anthony Russo certainly showed that they know how to handle the espionage adventures of a red, white and blue man, but for their next gig they’re going to have to go very monochromatic. The brotherly duo have been tapped by Sony Pictures to write and direct The Grey Man, an adaptation of Mark Greaney’s spy thriller novel, the first in a series of four, all of which the studio has already optioned. The film follows “a CIA operative-turned-assassin [who] looks to evade mysterious forces as he tries to save the lives of the daughters who don’t know he exists.”

The project was originally set up years ago with James Gray (We Own the Night, The Yards) directing Brad Pitt in the lead, but was constantly delayed due to the men’s other commitments until the rights eventually lapsed and Sony picked them up, with the intention of making this “the next ‘Bourne Identity’ movie series”

  • Bonus poster of the day! So the MPAA has ruled that Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will not be allowed to use this new Eva Green-centric poster because of “nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.” Because the MPAA is a prude joke, you see. I imagine there was much wiping of sweaty brows, fingers hooking into too tight shirt collars and furious harrumphing when this one crossed their desks.

  • My wife would probably sacrifice me to Kali if I were to come home with this set of Monkey Brain serving bowls from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but it would totally be worth it.
  • Congratulations Pacific Rim cosplay video from Thailand Comic Con, you win the internet for today.
