Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

In honour of Mother’s Day yesterday, we kick off today with Wired’s look at the Top 10 Mothers in Sci-Fi and Fantasy. And really, could there even be any doubt as to who is on the top of the heap? I mean, this is the woman who turned Edward Furlong into Christian Bale!

Shawn “Real Steel” Levy has replaced Brett Ratner who replaced Steven Spielberg on 39 Clues. Seeing as how Real Steel was unexpectedly cool, and Brett Ratner still getting regular directorial work is one of life’s greatest mysteries, this pleases me mightily.

Movies.com compiles their first volume of The Best New Sci-Fi Classics. With the exception of Timecrimes, I’ve seen all the films mentioned and will throw out some internet high-fives all around for a solid list.

We have our first promo poster for Robert Pattinson’s Mission: Blacklist, the true story of the man who masterminded the capture of Saddam Hussein. The poster is reasonably unremarkable, featuring just Pattinson’s eyes, a feature that Twihards around the world will already be intimately familiar with.

Julianne Moore has officially been signed on to the Chloe Moretz Carrie remake. She will be taking on the role of Margaret White, Carrie’s overbearing religious zealot mother.

Thanks to The Avengers, schwarma sales throughout America has increased dramatically, with up to an 80% rise reported in Los Angeles. Can I just say that it’s days like this that make me proud to walk amongst my fellow humans.

Speaking of The Avengers, ComicBookMovie has collected a gallery of gorgeous concept art for the record-breaking blockbuster.

Tom Wilson, better known as Biff Tannen from the Back To The Future series, is a funny guy. Over the years, the burgeoning standup comedian (both him and his career), has had to keep answering the same old questions about his iconic bully character. So to make life easier for everybody, he’s written this handy fact sheet of answers. :

And because I know some of you (*COUGH*gavin*COUGH*) don’t do too well with them sneaky letters and words, he even did a little song version about it a few years back:

Quint over at AICN has a very interesting theory on one of, if not the most pivotal moment of The Avengers. And no, it’s not the moment you may think. Also, SPOILER WARNING!

Here’s a new behind-the-scenes pic from JJ Abrams’ Star Trek 2 showing off Alice Eve, Mr Random-Extra-In-A-Hat and Zachary Quinto in front of an ice-cream truck. What makes this pic interesting, as BAD points out, is that while we still don’t know who Eve’s character is going to be, at this point the likeliest scenario is that’s she’s a Starbuck cosplayer.

Also, seriously, JJ? Lens flare on the behind the scenes pics? Really?

Michelle Monaghan will be joining Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan for action thriller, The Coup. She is expected to be playing the role of Wilson’s wife.

Lance Henriksen says that there’s a chance of us getting a Millennium movie. For those of you whippersnappers out there, Millennium was Chris “X-Files” Carter’s other series that ran from 1996 to 1999.

“I think it’s going to happen; I really do. “There’s a big push on right now, and a lot of crazy people involved…”

“There are a lot of fans out there, in 65 countries, and I can’t go anywhere in the world without being asked when a movie’s going to be made. It doesn’t have to be an expensive movie. It’s crazy not to give it a shot!”

We end off today on a very important public service announcement brought to us Michael Madsen. There’s been a lot said recently about allowing cellphone texting in cinemas, but unless what’s being said is “Don’t”, I really don’t want to hear it. Luckily Michael Madsen agrees, and can say it far better than I ever could:

And on that very informative but highly threatening note from Mr. Blonde, we bring today’s Extras to a close. I’m to do some work for our sister site, Lazygamer.net this evening, but I have a strong suspicion that I’m going to spend the whole night just humming about clowns to the left of me and jokers to the right…

I think Michael Madsen may actually be genuinely psychotic

He starred in Piranhaconda. Do we need any more evidence?

But I like his psychosis, because it means that he’s genuine when he threatens to cut off your ear and set you ablaze for using a cellphone in a movie theatre.

Quite right. I know exactly what you mean. It’s an admirable sort of insanity. There’s no pretension about it. If that man says he’s going to cut off your ear then by God, you know he’s going to cut off your ear
