Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We welcome differing opinions around these parts. In fact we encourage it, as we can often learn something from the resulting discourse. Why just last week, my arguments helped Darryn to realize that when somebody asks you to PP sign a document, it does in fact not mean urinating on it.

And when it comes to movies, we’ve certainly had our fair share of divisive opinions. Who can forget the great Schuster-gate scandal of 2012? One such film that also divided audiences in recent years was Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. Personally, I thought it was nothing but a glorified tech demo in a schoolgirl outfit, but according to Slashfilm’s Adam Quigley, I just didn’t understand it!

Well, crap. That almost makes sense. The fact that Snyder failed to properly convey this in any way still means it’s just a CGI wankfest though.

Did you know that if Mark Hamill was to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VII, as some have speculated would happen, the 32 year gap since he last wore the bathrobe would make him the official record holder of the longest break in between playing a character.

FilmSchoolRejects has an incredibly interesting article up on Why JJ Abrams Is Perfect for Episode VII But Terrible For Star Wars. Since they took the time to use actual words and sentences filled with actual logic – a far too rare occurrence on the interwebs – the least you could do is read it.

I can definitely say that on a scale of 1 to 10, my excitement levels for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is hovering somewhere arouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu- Oh, I’m sorry. I dozed off for a bit there after just thinking about that movie. You know who else is really not excited for the Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton starring movie? Jeremy Renner.

We’ve already seen one subtly hypnotic poster for Danny Boyle’s Trance, but now we have one that’s way more in your face. Along with the poster comes the news that the film has finally received a release date of 5 April 2013. Oh, and if  you squint your eyes just like so and move your head slowly forward, you might be able to see a schooner.

Looks like we’re going to be getting our kissing lessons a little earlier than expected. Producer and ex-franchise star Bruce Campbell revealed on his twitter account this morning that director Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake has been pushed forward by a week from its original 12 April release date.

@GroovyBruce: “The world cannot wait. The Evil Dead remake launches one week earlier! 4/5/13. You demanded it – you got it!”

Remember that story the other day about how Bradley Cooper is interested in playing disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, and that JJ Abrams says that he’s already busy emailing the actor about the role in his Armstrong biopic? Yeah, about that…

Cooper revealed to Access Hollywood that while yes, he did say that he was interested in playing Armstrong and still is, he had no idea that Abrams was making an Armstrong movie! Which of course begs the question: Who the hell has JJ been emailing?

Yo JJ! If your “Bradley Cooper” claims to be a prince with a hotmail account who needs your help in collecting his inheritance, it’s probably not legit!

A new clip has been released for A Good Day To Die Hard and I’m hoping and praying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that this is actually just a splicing together of different clips, instead of the actual final product, because Holy Horrible Action Editing, Batman!

I’m not going to lie, I have contemplated the lethal efficacy of a Blu Ray disc after being subjected to incorrectly setup home theatre systems. If you don’t fancy becoming my next victim, then I suggest you check out THX Tune-Up, a simple but very effective new home theatre calibration app that THX has launched. All you need is an iPad/iPhone, either with a HDMI adpater or a TV that supports Airplay. For this week only, the app will be available completely free, gratis, vir niks, so gets to clicking as you now have no more excuses. Well, except the whole iPad/iPhone thing. BUT OTHER THAN THAT!…

While everybody makes a big fuss about Marvel and DC’s comic book movie properties, there’s another dark horse in this race. Literally. Dark Horse comics has tons of cinematic potential, and we’ve already seen quite a few of adaptations of their properties on screen already, although you may not have even known it: Hellboy, MIB, The Mask, Timecop, Sin City, 300, AvP, Mystery Men, Tank Girl and Barb Wire have all come from their stable.

And now joining those ranks will be Matt Kindt’s “Mind MGMT” which is set to be produced by Ridley Scott for Twentieth Century Fox. No word yet on a writer/director but here’s the blurb for the book.

Reporting on a commercial flight where everyone aboard lost their memories, a young journalist stumbles onto a much bigger story, the top-secret Mind Management program. Her ensuing journey involves weaponized psychics, hypnotic advertising, talking dolphins, and seemingly immortal pursuers, as she attempts to find the flight’s missing passenger, the man who was Mind MGMT’s greatest success—and its most devastating failure. But in a world where people can rewrite reality itself, can she trust anything she sees?

Call me Mr Glass Half Empty, but I have a feeling that the Ashton Kutcher led Steve Jobs biopic jOBS might end up being a bit of a rotten apple. And the middling early buzz coming out of Sundance seems to agree with my sentiment. However there’s one part about the production that I – nor anybody else possessed of sight – really can’t criticize, and that’s the ridiculously accurate physical transformation of Kutcher into Jobs. And that uncanny resemblance is never on better display than in this newly released image that Kutcher tweeted out while attending the film’s premier.

BBC has announced that as part of this year’s 50th Anniversary celebrations of what has been scientifically proven to be the greatest TV show  known to man, Doctor Who, they will be producing a made for TV movie titled Adventures in Space and Time that will finally unveil its origins.

Now it’s at this point that I need to ask you to please stop jumping in your seat, and it’s probably also a good idea to not light those fireworks and to rather put back that bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label for a different celebration. You see, if you read my words carefully, you would notice I said that this movie would be exploring the TV show’s origin, not the Doctor’s. That little mystery is something that will probably never be fully explained, which is actually just the way I like it.

Written by frequent Who writer Mark Gattis, Adventures will see David Bradley (Harry Potter) in the role of William Hartnell, the actor who portrayed the very first Doctor, while Brian Cox (Bourne series) will play BBC’s Head of Drama Sydney Newman, the man credited with creating the show.

A couple days ago I posted a mashup vid where somebody spliced together scenes of the original Star Wars into the structure and using the musical cues of the trailer for JJ Abram’s Star Trek. It was a cool bit of mashing, but well, not at all indicative of what a JJ Abrams Star Wars would actually look like. This next clip though…

You may need to pop on some sunglasses before clicking play. The Flare is strong with this one!
