Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Darryn tends to do way more flying than I do (I think it may have something to do with the fact that he’s always getting run out of town for something), so I’m pretty sure that he will tell you that he’s completely phased out any pre-flight safety videos that may get shown. But he’s never seen a video like this one! Knowing that they need to liven things up a bit, Virgin America hired Jon M. Chu, director of Step Up 2 and Step Up 3D  (and also G.I. Joe: Retaliation, though that probably has no bearing on this), to direct this video titled “VX Safety Dance” and the result is pretty amazing.

Just like most of us, 5-year old Miles wishes he was Batman. Unlike most of us though, Miles is also suffering from Leukemia, making his dream a bit more difficult to achieve. Well, it would be if it wasn’t for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the people of San Francisco, who on November 15 will transform their city into Gotham, to allow for a full day of crime fighting for this “Batkid”.

They’re pulling out all the stops, including a Police Chief trying to call Batkid, rescuing a damsel in distress from some cable car tracks, and saving a kidnapped mascot from the villainous Mr. P.

Well played, Make-A-Wish Foundation. Well played.

If you’re anything like me, you’re going to spend the next 5 minutes staring at this new poster for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, trying to figure out exactly what the weird pictographic design is spelling out. Here’s a hint: It spells nothing.

The last time Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart did anything together on-screen, it resulted in the surprisingly decent Adventureland. Eisenberg then went on to play the same character in every movie since, while Stewart decided that more than one facial expression is clearly overkill. Now the pair are teaming up again for American Ultra, a new action comedy from Chronicle writer Max Landis and Project X director Nima Nourizadeh.

Eisenberg  stars as “an unmotivated stoner named Mike, who lives with his girlfriend Phoebe (Stewart) in a small, sleepy town. One night, their lives take an unexpected turn when Mike’s past comes back to haunt him, and he becomes the target of a government operation set to wipe him out.”

We regularly empty our saliva glands and occasionally our wallets over the posters from Mondo, and their latest poster for Gravity is once again a thing of beauty. And thanks to this video from artist Kevin Tong, we can see how that beauty is actually produced.

We’ve seen all kinds of giant mutated creature vs giant mutated creature flick from the folks over at SyFy over the years, but it seems that they’ve now run out of animals to throw into the blender and are just sticking to tried and tested single species creatures, as Sony has commissioned a Lake Placid VS Anaconda movie for direct-to-DVD release.

The first Ananconda movie was released in 1997 and saw Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight and Ice Cube fighting a giant snake in the Amazon, while Lake Placid was released two years later and saw Bridget Fonda, Bill Pullman and Oliver Platt going toe to scaly toe with a giant man-eating crocodile. Both films would spawn several sequels, each one worse than the last. But now the two reptiles will be doing battle themselves. Expect much bad CGI and wooden acting.

The one house you really didn’t want to visit in 2013 was ol’ Barack Obama’s pad, as it seems like every other weekend, somebody was taking it over and trying to blow it up. And quite often this would be about as difficult to accomplish as beating Darryn in a fist fight (he punches with the strength of a damp shoe lace). But really how difficult would it actually be? The folks at FilmSchoolRejects try to find out, and I’ve got some bad news for you, White House Down, just pretending to be a cleaner or video repairman is not going to work.

It feels like we’ve been waiting years for the return of Sherlock, and that’s because by the time season 3 airs in January 2014, we would have been. Two years, to be exact. But just to prove that stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman haven’t just been sitting around, smoking pipe-weed, reminiscing about the good ol’ days when Martin the hobbit stole Benedict the dragon’s cup, BBC have released the first official image from the the first episode along with a press release revealing promoting the first episode.

The question on everyone’s lips will finally be answered when Sherlock returns with three brand-new action-packed adventures. How did he do it? And how will John take the news that his best friend faked his own death? What will Sherlock think when he finds out John has fallen in love with Mary Morstan? She’s sensible, quick-witted and not at all taken in by Sherlock’s posturing. Once again, the game is on for Sherlock and John in the first episode of the new series, The Empty Hearse written by Mark Gatiss.

We’re just a couple of weeks shy of the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, or as we like to call it around here, Geek Christmas. And now we got an even better idea of just what will happen on that momentous day, as the first official plot blurb for the episode has finally dropped.

The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th anniversary special.  In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London’s National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor’s own dangerous past comes back to haunt him.

Something terrible? Murderous plots? Ancient space battles? ALLONS-Y!

As if Twilight haters needed even more things to point and laugh at, I now present to you Chuckesmee! “Who’s Chuckesmee?”, you ask. Well, if you’ve seen Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, then you may have seen the really bad CGI baby used for Edward and Bella’s half-vampire baby. You probably also laughed at it, and wondered why they did it like that. Well, it’s simple: The alternative, an animatronic baby doll, was even worse. Nicknamed Chuckesmee, due to it being creepier than Chucky, the possessed doll from the Child’s Play horror series, it is the thing of nightmares. Really funny nightmares.
