Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Last night saw the US debut of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and while it’s still a bit early to call whether the show lives up to our Whedon-dreams (especially since we have no idea when/if it will be airing locally), at least we know it will sound damn good thanks to the feature-film level score created by Bear McCreary, as can be seen in this new featurette.

Everybody loves a little vindication (I use doggie treats for Darryn whenever he writes a post without spelling/grammar errors… so, never) so the guys over at Marvel Studios must be feeling pretty chuffed about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Ed Brubaker, the man who created the character of the Winter Soldier and revitalized the (pun not intended) flagging Captain America comic book title when took tenure of it a few years ago, has given the script a once-over, and he really likes what he sees.

“I read the script [for Captain America: Winter Soldier] and I was really blown away by it. The tone of it and the Bucky stuff is so perfect and the way I’d want it to be, I was so thrilled to see that. But to me the biggest thing, too, is it’s the first time Marvel has put out a movie where there’s a specific book the title of the movie relates to.”

On Sunday night, Jeff Daniels won an Emmy for playing whip-smart, super knowledgeable news anchor Will McAvoy, who regularly tackles serious issues like gun control, the division of religion and politics and military oversight. Ohm what a difference a few days make. Daniels has joined Jim Carrey in commencing production on Dumb & Dumber To and thanks to CarreyDaniels and the film’s official twitter account, we a few first looks at the dimwitted pair back in costume again.

Daniels also spoke to E! Online about the long in development sequel, and how they would be topping some of the original comedy classic’s crass humour.

“There are some things that’s we’re going to do in Dumb and Dumber To that make the toilet scene [in the original] seem lame. Pales in comparison and I can’t divulge what, but just that they’ve topped it. They best thing about it? I get to work with a comedic genius.”

Looks like everybody’s favourite walking rug, Chewbacca, is pulling an Arnold Schwarzenegger. No, he’s not having an illegitimate lovechild with his housekeeper, but rather it seems that he’ll be back. In Star Wars Episode VII, specifically. A casting call has gone out for the highly anticipated film, and the description certainly appear to match with somebody needed to play a Wookiee.

Tall Man (Male, 21 – 60) Male, 7 ft to 7.3 ft tall with a slim/thin build and upright posture. Not too worked out or too ‘thick set’ especially in the shoulders. Broad facial features would be a bonus.

7ft2″ Peter Mayhew originally played Chewbacca, but the 69-year old actor has suffered several debilitating health problems over the years, due to his enlarged stature, which has left him unable to walk unaided. This could open the door for a new young actor to play the iconic role.

Staying with Star Wars, the new animated show from Disney, Star Wars Rebels, may just have found its leading men in David Oyelowo and Freddie Prinze Jr. Oyelowo has been doing very solid work in several high profile productions – like Lincoln, The Paperboy and Jack Reacher – so landing his voice skills here is quite the coup. Freddie Prinze Jr really didn’t much else going on his life. The pair will be joined by Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray and Steven Jay Blum, who will round out the principal voice cast.

Other than the fact that the show takes place in the 20 year gap between the original and prequel trilogies, when the Empire is busy expanding it’s control of the galaxy, not much else is known about it, so there’s clue as to who these actors will be lending their voices to.

And going for the “Movies starting with the word ‘Star'” trifecta, here’s a cool gallery of pics where the faces of the actors of the new JJ Abrams directed Star Trek reboot films, have been merged with those of the original series’ actors. The results are actually pretty startling, when you realize just how close they actually are. Check out Chris Pine and William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk, as an example.

A story made the rounds yesterday, that Daniel Radcliffe was the frontrunner to replace Sacha Baron-Cohen in the still untitled Freddie Mercury biopic. Yes, really. That story has now bit the dust, so to speak, as The Wrap has spoken to a few people close to Radcliffe, who have confirmed that the Harry Potter star has not been approached in any way for the role. Thank goodness. Radcliffe is a pretty fine actor, and actually a decent singer, but he resembles Freddie Mercury about as much as he resembles Oprah Winfrey.

Baron-Cohen, who actually really looks the part, dropped out earlier in the year due to creative differences: He wanted to make a no-holds barred, tell-all film about the Queen frontman’s raunchy life, while the remaining band members wanted a family friendly tale about their deceased friend.

There is just one week left in Breaking Bad, arguably the greatest show currently on TV (or at least that’s what Darryn keeps telling me, seeing as how I’ve just started on Season 1, much to my shame) and there are many theories being bandied about, about how the show will end. Those kooky kids over at Key of Awesome have some of their own crazy theories about it, and they’ve gone and turned them into a musical. Because awesome.

Alex “Dark City” Proyas’ new fantasy epic The Gods of Egypt is gathering quite the cast of leading men. Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau had previously been cast in the film and now THR is reporting that Gerard Butler is in talks, and Geoffrey Rush has already joined the production.

The film follows the events “set in motion when one ruling god, Set (Butler), kills another, Osiris. When Osiris’ son Horus (Coster-Waldau) fails in his attempt to get revenge, and has his eyed plucked out, it’s up to a young human thief in love with a slave to help defeat the mad god”. Rush will play the sun god Ra, “the father of Set and Osiris who is also Set’s ultimate target.”

As a huge fan of Egyptology, as well as everybody involved in this, consider me very intrigued.

Here’s a new not-so-insane poster to go with that hilariously insane trailer for Hellbenders, that Darryn wrote about last week. Now can somebody please explain to me why Clifton Collins Jr. is sporting Bobby Ewing hair?

Back when Marvel started this whole movie thing with Iron Man, there were a number of other projects that they were also being prepped to get the big screen treatment. Most of these have been made, or can be found somewhere on Marvel’s future plans. But there’s been one mysterious omission in The Runaways, Iron Man scribe Drew Pearce’s adaptation of the acclaimed comic about a group of teenagers who run away from their homes together when they discover that their parents are actually a group of supervillains bent on world domination. Iron Man director and co-writer, Shane Black, called it the greatest script he’s ever read that’s currently sitting on a shelf somewhere. So what happened to it? Tony Stark and his friends did, that’s what, as Pearce explained to THR.

“We were really close to being made, and then this movie started to happen called The Avengers. Oddly, it pulled focus from the unheard-of brand Runaways, and it really did kind of consume the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s there — maybe it’ll be a Phase Three movie. I really hope so. I’m really proud of it and I think it’ll be a brilliant film, but I think it all depends what Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, [what] his master plan is.”

As some (but not enough) self-styled celebrities have discovered, just because you make it big on social media, doesn’t mean that you’re actually successful in life. And this, year a number of films also found that out the hard way. It seems that even when people Like you, they don’t actually like you (say hello, After Earth!).

With that in mind, Film School Rejects have drawn up this great infographic on The Summer 2013 Movies That Owned Social Media. So gets your mouse scrolling on, and check it out!
