Okay, so Father’s Day was a couple of days ago already, but that doesn’t mean that we still can’t celebrate some paternal bonding over here. For example, this new R-Rated clip from Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon, where he and his on-screen dad, Tony Danza, partake in that most timeless of father-son activities: Checking out Scarlett Johannson’s boobs.
Russell Crowe has fought Emperors, fathered superheroes, made music and thrown telephones, and now he’s looking to take up a new gig: Directing. The Oscar winning Aussie actor will be making his directorial debut with The Water Diviner, in which he will also star. The turn of the century drama was written by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios. Here’s the synopsis:
“It’s 1919, and as the stench of cordite that has engulfed the world thins, an Australian father arrives at Gallipoli to recover the bodies of his sons, only to find hope where he thought there was none.”
Legendary Pictures held a press conference yesterday, and director Guillermo Del Toro was there to talk about Pacific Rim, where explained that he and writer Travis Beacham had already begun work on a script for the sequel, but that it goes “in a very different route from the first one.”
The Mexican born director also indicated that for the sequel, we would see a Mexican jaeger – the giant mech’s used to battle monsters – and in fact, it would have made an appearance in the first film already but “We basically couldn’t afford it. [laughs] He was the most expensive Jaeger.”
This new Anchorman 2 poster is kind of a big thing. That is all.
While most of us rank the latest trend of 3D somewhere between smallpox and lawyers who chew with the mouths open, there’s one person that disagrees wholeheartedly. And it’s not even because of money. University of California professor Bruce Bridgeman, who has struggled with depth perception on his vision ever since birth, claims that ever since watching Martin Scorsese’s Hugo 3D, his eyesight has improved significantly.
I never saw the first Dolphin Tale, but I do know that my wife shed enough tears over the aquatic family adventure to fill another seaworld. And apparently she wasn’t the only one who enjoyed it, as the 2011 true life family film proved to be a hit, tripling its budget in box office returns. So of course, they’re now making a sequel. The entire cast of the first film, including Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson are in negotiations to return, alongside Winter, the tail-less dolphin whose true life story was depicted in the first film. The second film will now introduce a second dolphin, Hope, who was rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 2010.
There’s a new clip out for World War Z, expanding one of the more memorable scenes shown in the trailer.
The Orphanage (which we just featured last week) and The Impossible director Juan Antonio Bayona will be going back to his creepy roots it would seem. The Spanish filmmaker has signed on to direct the first two episodes of Penny Dreadful, the upcoming Showtime horror series created, written and executive produced by John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo) and co-executive produced by Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty, Road to Perdition).
The show will feature classic horror literary characters such as Dr Frankenstein and Dorian Grey, becoming embroiled in a tale in Victorian London. Think League of Extraordianry Gentlemen, but only creepy.
As we’ve been told several times by that ginger wildchild in Game of Thrones, Jon Snow knows nothing. Well, almost nothing. See everybody’s favourite gloomy bastard knows that if you truly want to achieve anything worthwhile in life, like going North of the wall, there’s one thing you need: An 80’s movie training montage!
There are many things I would like to see in Star Wars: Episode VII. George Lucas’ influence is not one of them. While I will always be appreciative to the man for creating this universe which I’ve escaped to so often over the years, its become abundantly clear that he’s become a victim of his own success, just coming up with bad ideas because nobody will disagree with him. And so with that in mind, it’s with a smile that I greet this revelation from the Great Flannel himself, that he actually has not even spoken to Episode VII director JJ Abram yet about the movie.
“I have not spoken to J.J. He’s been busy with Star Trek, and I’m sure that he’ll let me know when he’s got some questions. So, you know, that’s all going well. Kathy tells me it’s working out great.”
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’ gonzo novel is… well, I’m afraid I’m not intoxicated enough to conjure up the correct adjectives to describe it, so let’s just go with “different”. That being said, it’s a rather hilarious as well. But if the “different” angle puts you off from watching it, then don’t worry, I’ve got you covered: How about a just as hilarious retelling of the entire film in 60 seconds?
