We kick off today with the same trailer for Rian Johnson’s Looper that we’ve seen before. Well, not quite the same. Essentially it’s the same footage, but presented in an array of animation styles. It certainly is an interesting way of releasing new promo material for a film, without actually showing revealing anything new.
Looks like a TV adaption of Joel and Ethan Coen’s Academy Award winning darkly comic crime thriller, Fargo, has not only been greenlit at FX, but that the talented brothers themselves are on board to executive produce. Bones writer Noah Hawley will be writing as well as executive producing. It’s still not sure what format the show would take, seeing as the movie had a pretty finite story.
Remember that all-female version of The Expendables that was touted about a short while back? Well, you’ll be happy to know that no, that actually wasn’t just one of your fantasies, and is actually getting made. Producer Adi Shankar is apparently in talks with a number of prominent actresses, but he’s already landed his first star: Gina Carano.
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of ‘The Expendables’ without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.”
As much as I appreciated Carano’s action credentials, the male Expendables worked because of the iconic nature of actors involved. Carano may be a lot of things, most of them synonyms for “hot” but iconic she certainly is not.
Here’s the new poster for The Smurfs 2, the sequel to the last year’s surprise smash hit. Either that, or I’ve just stumbled onto Winston Churchill’s private cosplay photo collection.
James Gandolfini and Steve Carrell have signed on to play the leads in a new comedy project titled The Bone Men. No, there’s nothing dirty about that title. The comedy will find the duo as a pair as paleontologists in the 1800’s, which is a concept that immediately just fills you with overflowing mirth, right? Right?!
Well it better, because when Tony Soprano says something is “really funny”, you damn well better laugh.

Acclaimed director Alfonso Cuaron will be making his first entry into American TV land with TV veteran and fan favourite director JJ Abrams as his guide. The pair have had received a greenlight from NBC for a pilot about “a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years — and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down.” Cuaron will be directing the pilot off a script from Mark Friedman.
Here’s our first look at Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars, Lindsey Booth as Night Bitch and Robert Emms as Insect Man in this set video for Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall. In the vid you can see Carrey, who is totally looking the part of the Colonel, talking to Aaron Johnson’s Kick-Ass.
The competition to play iconic female singers Carly Simon and Carole King in the lady rockers biopic, Girls Like Us, just got a whole lot more heated. It was revealed earlier in the year that Taylor Swift had already been cast as Joni Mitchell with The Newsroom‘s Allison Pill as the favourite to play King, with just Simon’s role up for grabs. But now it looks like Pill’s going to have to fight for the spot, as Olivia Thirlby, Ari Graynor and Zoe Kazan will now all be gunning against her for the gig, with Allison Williams, Jessica Pare and Analeigh Tipton going head to head to play Simon.
Collider has picked up on something pretty interesting: LEGO have revealed the names of tie-in Lego sets to Iron Man 3, The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel, and while the names are all pretty expected and tie into scenes from the movies, Man of Steel has one titled “Black Zero Escapes”. Black Zero was the name of an immensely powerful Superman villain in an earlier version of the current comic-book timeline, who destroyed Supes’ home planet Krypton, and was even too powerful for the big boy blue scout to take on. Could Black Zero be a secret villain for the Superman reboot?
Here’s a new poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey featuring Bilbo with Sting. No, 80’s and 90’s pop-rock sensation Gordon Summner is not doing a duet with the Tolkien’s favourite halfling. Sting is the name of his sword.
This Friday past was actually the 65th birthday of horror writer extraordinaire, Stephen King. It was also the birthday of the eponymous star of his very first published novel, Carrie. To celebrate, the Facebook page of the currently in-production reboot featuring Chloe Moretz as the blood-drenched telekinetic, has been updated with the birth certificate of one Carrietta White.
Because that’s totally not creepy.
The official stage production of Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke has completely sold out their April 2013 London theatre run within just 72 hours of tickets going on sale. I’m still not sure that a stage will be able to capture some of the wondrous visuals of the original film, but I would definitely want to give it a watch. Here’s hoping the show reaches our shores one day.
Ted director/writer/star and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will be developing a new live-action comedy series for the FX network. The show will “follow a pair of 30-something friends whose respective fathers wind up living with them”. Hopefully also with more beer swilling, foul talking teddy bears.
And we end today on this video of Andy Serkis reading The Hobbit on stage to a bunch of kids and fans, completely in character as Gollum. Really, if you need more reason than that sentence to click play on this video, then you and I clearly don’t have the same standards for what is cool or not.
