Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Hey, happy New Posters Day everybody! Wait, so you didn’t get the memo either? Ah well, prepare to get treated to a whole bunch of new posters today, starting with this rather eye-catching “cinemosaic” motion poster from Star Trek Into Darkness.

With the seriously unfunny looking inAPPropriate Comedy, it seems that once Oscar nominated actor Adrien Brody was about to pull a “now you see my career, now you don’t” magic trick, luckily for him (and us) though, he’s got something better up his sleeve. Brody has signed on to play famed illusionist and escape artist Harry Houdini in a new miniseries on the History Channel. Houdini will look at the magician’s rags to riches life story, and will be the latest non-documentary series that History produces after the huge successes of The Bible and Hatfields & McCoys.

Speaking of magic acts, there’s a new trailer out for Louis Letterier’s magical heist movie, Now You See Me, and it’s still looking slicker that Darryn’s girly-boy chest.

We’ve already seen character posters for the rest of the cast of The Hangover 3 and today it’s Zach Galifianikis’ turn. And to make up the rather boring last poster with Bradley Cooper, this one sees Galifianakis being chased by a man dressed like a cartoon pig. Because that’s how Zach Galifianakis rolls.

The crazy game of musical chairs that is troubled indie Western Jane Got a Gun has finally come to an end (we hope). The tale sees Natalie Portman having to call in the help of ex-lover, Joel Edgerton, to protect her shot up ex-outlaw husband, when his old gang, led by Bradley Cooper, comes to kill him, but until now the sort of important role of the husband has been standing vacant. No more though, as Noah Emmerich (who’s actually acted in every single one of director Gavin O’Connor’s previous films) has finally been cast in the role.

And posterpalooza continues! Next up, two new posters for Fast & Furious 6, the first featuring Han (Sung Kang) and Giselle (Gal Dadot), while the second sees Roman (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) and Tej (Tyrese Gibson) take centre stage.

Staying with all things Fast and Furious, after longtime series director Justin Lin finally decided to call it quits recently, Universal has been urgently looking for a replacement to helm the… ahem… fast tracked Fast & Furious 7 in his place. Well, it looks like they may just have… scared one up, in the form of horror maestro James “Insidious” Wan. Nothing is confirmed yet, but at this point it looks pretty likely that Wan is on board, especially after he tweeted this last night:

@creepypuppet: “Vroom Vroooom…”

While Wan has been doing sterling work with his small budget horror fare, it will be interesting to see how his direction translates to a big budget action blockbuster.

And next up in the poster tsuanami, we have two new character poster for Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, this time featuring Helena Bonham Carter as Red Harrington and Ruth Wilson as Rebecka Reid. And if you have no idea who they are, have no fear, because along with the posters, Disney has released these handy little character introductions as well.

“Meet Red Harrington. The dramatically coiffed, straight-talking, ivory-legged proprietor of a mobile establishment of lavish entertainments.”

“Meet Rebecca Reid. She’s made for finer things, yet possesses the grit and independence of a frontierswoman. Her spirit is caught between two men: her husband Dan, and his younger brother, John.”

For those of you not clued up on you Lone Ranger lore, the “John” they refer to above is the Ranger himself, played by Armie Hammer, while his brother Dan, himself a famed lawman, will be played by James Badge Dale.

After her scene stealing, Oscar nominated turn in 2011’s True Grit, young Hailee Steinfeld went on to… Doing the handstands in Unbeatable Banzuke? Finishing all of “Ghosts ‘n Goblins” in a single credit? Who knows? The point is, she wasn’t making movies. But that’s changed now, as she’s been lining up the projects, and one of her most high profile next gigs will see her returning to the frontier that made her famous for Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman. Jones will be donning a whole lot more hats than just the obligatory Stetson as he will serve as star, director, co-writer and producer on the Western that sees “an untrustworthy man (Jones) and a spinster school teacher (Hilary Swank) team up to transport three women deemed crazy via ox-drawn wagon across the Western plains.”

The ridiculously talented cast will be rounded out by Meryl Streep, James Spader, John Lithgow and James Blake Nelson, so in other words, Oscar bait.

And now, this is the end. No really, here’s a new clip from Seth Rogen’s apocalyptic meta-comedy, This Is The End, which sees a number of actors playing themselves, caught in the end of the world. The clip gives a taste of celebrity thought processes, as well as the unassailable truth that nobody wants to die in James Franco’s house.
