Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

I’m not a volatile man. I tend to keep my cool in most situations. Which is more than can be said for the people in this next video. Youtube user Zach Prewitt has put together this supercut of movie Temper Tantrums that is really something to behold. (Just a NSFW warning: when people blow their top, they usually do it the accompaniment of some choice four letter words)

Following on from the King of the Chin, Bruce Campbell, yesterday, Sam Raimi has now also spoken up about the new Evil Dead remake. While the verdict is still out on whether it will be good or not, as least we know it will be gory:

“It’s really bloody.  It’s so bloody, it will make your head spin.  I’ve seen almost all the dailies and they’re really going for it.  It’s gonna be grisly and intense and non-stop.

Definitely R.  Maybe worse.”

Worse than R? The last time I remember that happening to a mainstream movie, Sharon Stone’s spreadeagled ladybits were involved.

Yes! Kat Dennings is going to be back for Thor: The Dark World and she’s going to have even more screen time this time around. Because that’s precisely the character I cared the most about in the first one!

After Joel Kinneman (maybe) molests your memories of Robocop, he’s off to join the ever expanding cast of Terernce Mallick’s mysterious Knight of Cups.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Gal Gadot are trying to out-Blue Steel each other in this new behind the set pic for Fast and Furious 6 tweeted by the Israeli actress.

@galgadot1: “Do not mess with us”

While they can’t really do anything about the more expensive prices being charged by cinemas for 3D movies, it looks like a couple of smart guys over at the University of Arizona may have found a way around another problem: those pesky hipster-esque 3D glasses. They appear to have found a way to have whole cinema audiences experience glasses-free 3D.

If you were disappointed at the news that Sean Penn will just be behind the camera for Crazy for the Storm, then you’d be pleased to know that he’s found an equally talented actor to take up one of the lead roles. Josh Brolin will play the father to Norman Ollestead, upon whose memoirs the film is based. When 11-years old, Ollestead ound himself as the sole survivor of a plane crash and had to make use of the  skills his father had taught him to survive.

Director Paul Haggis’ next project, Third Person, is once again using the multiple narratives approach he employed in his award winning Crash. This time it’s “about three story lines, three love stories, three relationships in three different cities that combine in a very odd way: New York, Paris, Rome.” We know that Liam Neeson and Olivia Wilde are already signed on for 2 members of said relationships, and now it looks like Mila Kunis will be joining them. Anybody else hoping that Kunis goes all Black Swan on Wilde?

The Revenant, the horror comedy about a set of vigilante zombie/vampires that made a splash at Fantastic Fest has a new trailer out. It will probably never get a local big screen release, but is something to keep an eye out for as it looks fun enough.

Want to sound like Bane from The Dark Knight Rises but just can’t be bothered to teach yourself how to speak like a psychopathic version of Sean Connery who is getting his testicles squeezed ever so gently? Well then this Bane dialogue soundboard is for you!

Olivia Williams, best known as playing the ice maiden Adelle DeWitt on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, has joined the Arnold Schwarzenegger DEA heist thriller Breacher. I wonder if she’s going to pimp Arnie out as well?

It’s almost universally accepted that Battlefield Earth is the worst moment in John Travolta’s career – and that’s including the accusations of an adult sleepover gone wrong with Kenickie – but he may just be looking to top that. There’s a story going around that he’s attached to lead a reboot of 80’s grindhouse film Toxic Avenger.

Here’s a refresher for those of you too young to remember the cheese:

Nina Simone’s daughter, Simone (which is totally not confusing), is apparently not very happy about the recent news that Zoe Saldana would be playing her jazz legend mother in a new biopic.

“Greetings Nina Simone Lovers, Simone here.

I have read many of the comments am happy you all took the time to share your thoughts and feelings.

Here’s mine:

When the announcement initially hit the press with MJ Blige cast as Nina (about 6 yrs ago) I heard it along with everyone else. The story was written as a love story between my mother and her former nurse, Clifton Henderson and primarily takes place during the last 8 years of her life.

Please note, this project is unauthorized. The Nina Simone Estate was never asked permission nor invited to participate.

I have seen many names regarding who you think should play the role of Nina. Remember Angela Bassett as Tina Turner? SHE NAILED IT! Angela Bassett is an ACTRESS! And, we all know she lip synced along with Tina and did an amazing job. Personally, I prefer an actress to a singer. Just because a person is great at one does not mean they will be great at the other. If written, funded and CAST PROPERLY a movie about my mother will make an lasting imprint.

My vision of a movie about my mother includes SO many pivotal moments that are monumentally important towards relaying the journey of a woman whose journey began as a child prodigy born in North Carolina in the 1930′s…too many to list here but, trust when I say the tale will inspire through the sheer sharing of HOW Eunice Waymon became Nina Simone, The High Priestess Of Soul renowned worldwide. How many of you know my mother’s FIRST love was classical music? Do you know the hours she practiced preparing to audition for the Curtis Institute of Music only to be rejected because of the color of her skin? **After my mother made her transition I accepted a diploma from that very same institute with a speech she began writing but was unable to finish prior to her death.** As a child, my mother was told her nose was too big and she was too dark yet she graduated valedictorian of her high school class – The Allen School for Girls – AND, skipped two grades. Nina was one of the most outspoken, prolifically gifted artists using the stage to speak out against racism during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960′s. Her friends included Betty Shabazz, Lorraine Hansberry (my godmother), Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Miriam Makeba, Stokely Carmichael, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings and Queens worldwide. Had she become a classical pianist, which was her dream….shattered, I doubt she would have found her true destiny. Nina Simone was a voice for her people and she spoke out HONESTLY, sang to us FROM HER SOUL, shared her joy, pain, anger and intelligence poetically in a style all her own. My mother stood up for justice, by any means necessary hahahaha YES, she was a revolutionary til the day she died. From Tragedy to Transcendence – MY VISION. The whole arc of her life which is inspirational, educational, entertaining and downright shocking at times is what needs to be told THE RIGHT WAY.

By the way:

Clifton Henderson was gay. He was not attracted to women. So, the truth is…Nina Simone and Clifton Henderson NEVER had a relationship other than a business one.

Please correct me, but isn’t a biopic the story of one’s life?

I have faith things will work out the right way and my mother’s real story will be told. For all she endured while here and all of the lives she has touched, she DESERVES to be remembered for who she truly was; not some made up love story from a former nurse/manager (now deceased) who sold his life rights because of his relationship to Nina Simone.

Ciao Y’All….Simone”

To end off, and following up from our Mid-Week Mouth-off today, how about checking out recently deceased Tony Scott making his film debut? This scene from older brother Ridley’s 1965 short film Boy and his Bicycle, sees 16-year old Tony as the eponymous character. And for even more trivial pursuit ammunition, this film is actually scored by none other than a young John “James Bond theme song” Williams.
