Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Firstly, if you’ve never seen a Christopher Nolan film, then just know that I group you with people who don’t wash their hands after using public restrooms. Disgusting. Secondly, you can now easily get out of this maligned group thanks to Warner Bros announcing a 7 disc Chris Nolan Director’s Collection Blu-ray boxset.

The eyepatch worn by John Wayne in the classic 1969 western, True Grit, is up for auction. The piece of movie memorabilia is expected to fetch upwards of £20,000. Wayne won an Oscar for his portrayal of the drunkard lawman, Rooster Cogburn.

The man behind Moon is telling the story of the man behind Moonraker – Director Duncan Jones is going to make a biopic of James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

“Fleming lived through one of the most perilous periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique vantage point of all the players, all the stakes,” said Jones. “He witnessed true heroism first-hand. And he saw the evil men could do. Then, when the war ended, he went off to write fiction. The essential question for me is: Where did Ian Fleming end and Bond begin?”

Friday Night Light‘s Minka Kelly will be the Jackie O. to Matthew McConnaughey’s JFK in Lee (Precious) Daniels’ The Butler. This link was based on the book Push by Sapphire.

Entertainment Tonight visited the set of the Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller The Tomb, and we got our first look at the characters that the two action legends would portray.

I kind of like Arnold with the steely grey hair (I’m guessing that that might actually be his real hair colour) as it gives him even more of a badass look.

The Wrap asks if The Avengers and The Hunger Games are spoiling the box office for everybody else.

Mark Millar says that Kick-Ass 2 will open with 30 minutes of just Hit Girl, before getting to Kick-Ass’ story.

This new Mondo poster for The Iron Giant is like a colourful slice of childhood innocence.

The Obama administration is taking flak for sharing classified intelligence with director Katherine Bigelow for her movie Zero Dark Thirty, which highlights the SEAL team that took down Osama Bin Laden. Well rather that, than having her just make up stuff. Although I would like to have seen a scene where Joel Edgerton chases Bin Laden – who’s wearing a Nixon mask – through the houses of a Pakistani suburb, before failing the chase when his bum knee – from an old football injury – gives out. As Bin Laden runs away, Edgerton lies on the ground and screams as he fires his pistol in the air until empty.

Peter Weller, most famous for playing gunned-downed cop turned law-enforcement cyborg and creator of a disco dance craze in Paul Verhoeven’s Robocop, will be voicing Bruce Wayne and his costumed alter ego, Batman, in DC’s direct-to-DVD animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.

Slashfilm interviews Mark Andrews. The director of Pixar’s Brave not the old rugby player. Oh and he’s not too happy about how Disney threw John Carter under the bus either.

This concept art for Peter Berg’s Battleship is gorgeous. Click to embiggenate.

Darth Vader vs Gandalf. Epic doesn’t even begin to describe it.

As a couterpoint to an article we linked to yesterday about why we need less midnight screenings, here’s the NY Times telling us How To Enjoy Going To The Movies Again. If you haven’t figured it out yet, here’s a spoiler: It involves midnight screenings.

Vulture discusses 5 Consequence of the Sinking of Battleship. It’s a very enlightening article that I highly recommend you give a read, as it makes some pretty good points.

We finish off today with Redux Riding Hood, a 1997 animated film from Disney boasting the voices of such stars as Michael Richards, Mia Farrow, Adam West and even Fabio. Yes, Fabio. The film, which tells how the wolf spent years plagued with self-doubt after failing to chomp down on Red, earned an Oscar nomination for its score, despite the fact that Disney had the bizarrely off-the-wall film shelved in 1998, never to see the light of day again.

Until now, that is. It’s finally available online now, and is definitely worth a watch.

And if you haven’t seen it before Kervyn, Freeway is an awesome Little Red Riding Hood adaptation.  Likely Reese Witherspoon’s best (and most badass) role ever.
