Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

If you’ve gotten tired off all the massive explosions, people in funny costumes and poop flinging jokes that seems to always be in movie news (James Francis, I’m talking to you), then this new video from Flavorwire is just the cure for you. Titled 135 Shots That Will Restore Your Faith In Cinema, it’s a sweeping compilation of some of magical moments we’ve been privy to witness on the big screen thus far.

Gwyneth Paltrow has signed on as the lead in a feature film adaptation of Gabrielle Hamilton’s 2011 memoir Blood, Bones & Butter. Despite the blood part though, this one is firmly in the foodie drama zone a la Julie and Julia. Here’s the synopsis:

‘Blood, Bones & Butter’ follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood, where her adored mother stood over the six-burner with an oily wooden spoon in hand; the kitchens of France, Greece, and Turkey, where she was often fed by complete strangers and learned the essence of hospitality; the soulless catering factories that helped pay the rent; Hamilton’s own kitchen at Prune, with its many unexpected challenges; and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law, who serves as the link between Hamilton’s idyllic past and her own future family—the result of a difficult and prickly marriage that nonetheless yields rich and lasting dividends.

I’d be willing to bet that a lot of our male readers didn’t even make it through the second sentence.

I know I shouldn’t laugh at other people’s misfortune, but after all the ridiculous criticism we faced from the Brits prior to our hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, I sort of feel like justice is prevailing a bit now that they’re just over a week away from the 2012 London Olympics. Oscar winning film director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) has been put in charge of the whole affair, and if it wasn’t bad enough that he has to battle Mother Nature, it seems that he’s decision to produce the event more like a massive drama film than a sporting occasion is causing quite a bit of consternation with the crew, with some threatening to bail on the whole project.

A new teaser poster has been released for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, and it’s taken a rather mysterious alcoholic twist. With so much of the film being held under wraps (probably in fear of a backlash from the Scientology community, which this film is hinted at portraying), we really have no idea what this poster implies.

If you’ve never seen the epic Lawrence of Arabia, then you might want to hang on until October. And maybe book a plane ticket. A digitally restored bladder-destroying 216 min long director’s cut of the film will be re-released to theatres on 4 October. And while this is truly the way the movie is meant to be watched, the chances of our local cinema chains playing an old movie is pretty slim. Luckily though, the same cut will be made available as part of a Blu Ray Collector’s Box Set on 13 November.

Rian Johnson’s time travelling thriller Looper has launched its official site at Loopermovie.com. Besides for hosting most of the clips and images we’ve seen released thus far, the site also contains entries about some of the more mysterious elements glimpsed in the trailers such far, such as:

TK: Short for “telekinetic.” By 2040 a very low grade telekinetic power has developed in about 15% of the general population. Far from being a superpower, it’s weak and short range and mostly used for bar tricks.

Tomorrow sees the release of every dirty fantasy your girlfriend/wife has ever had that doesn’t involve you become real aka Magic Mike. The closest cinema is about 5 km’s from my house. I expect to be deafened by the screams.

But the type of power that these scantily clad, six-pack sporting men have over our females is something that I’m sure quite a couple of you are jealous of. Even actor Jason Biggs, who already proved in the last American Pie movie that he’s willing to let it all hang out. Which is why he made this audition tape.

A warning though: While this video has no nudity it has some strong language. And Jason Biggs fearlessly/painfully making a fool of himself.

Following in the footsteps of TMNT’s Kevin Eastman as a creator who apparently doesn’t mind that people are remaking their life’s work, Sam Raimi has come out to speak about the Evil Dead reboot, which sees Bruce Campbell’s chainsaw-armed, shotgun wielding Ash replaced by skinny, preppy girl. Which apparently doesn’t bother him as it shouldn’t be about honoring the original:

“I don’t think about it like that. I just think Fede Alvarez has really made a great horror movie. It’s scary. The actors are great in it. It’s really gut-wrenching, real low budget and intense.”

And all the fanboys go “Wha-?”

And now a touching Comic-Con story that completely slipped under the radar of a number of sites: During one of the panels, author and comic writer Joe Hill had the privilege of reading a letter from Frank Darabont, in which the acclaimed director said his goodbyes to legendary science fiction writer Ray Bradbury who passed away in June. Before you click that link, make sure you’ve stocked up on the tissues.

Beyond the Trailer’s Grace Randolph managed to score an interview with Doug Jones, the acclaimed character actor who, just like Andy Serkis, has made a name for himself in roles where you can’t even see his face. The Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four, Abe Sapien from Hellboy, The Thin Man in Pan’s Labyrinth; he’s played a veritable menagerie of cinematic creatures. And now he shares details of his next role, as the alien villain in the Ben Stiller comedy, The Watch.

Hayao Miyazaki’s classic anime film Princess Mononoke will be headed to the London theatre stage. The Whole Hog Theatre company will be performing an adaption of the acclaimed Studio Ghibli film as from April next year at the Diorama Theatre. And I wish the Whole Hog Theatre a whole lot of luck in pulling this off, as this is a tale that is epic in every sense of the word.

Here’s a synopsis of the “epic ecological fable” as well as the image of the production:

Young warrior Ashitaka is a marked man. Cursed by a demon god while defending his village, he must leave his home forever to seek a cure. In the forbidding forests to the west, he is forced to reconcile the warring human forces and the animal deities of times past. In the midst of this bitter and bloody conflict, he meets the wolf god Moro and her human child San, also known as Princess Mononoke.

Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln has been slated for release on November 9th. Unlike that other vampiric take on America’s 16th president, this one will be firmly grounded in reality, looking at Lincoln’s conflict with his fellow politicians close to the end of the Civil War.

Being directed by Spielberg, released just on the cusp of awards season and sporting an incredible cast led by Daniel Day-Lewis – the greatest living actor in my opinion – in the title role, and rounded out by Joseph Gordon Levitt, John Hawkes, Tommy Lee Jones and James Spader, you can be damn sure you’re going to be hearing a lot more about this one at next year’s Oscars.

Amanda Plummer, probably best known as playing kooky would-be robber Honey Bunny in Pulp Fiction, has been cast as playing kooky tribute Wiress in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I guess when you do crazy real well, people notice.

Speaking of crazy. The proposed Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie seems to be stuck in development limbo at the moment, despite claims that a R rated test reel is apparently just warming the shelves over at FOX. So what are fans of the schizophrenic Merc With The Mouth to do? Well, make their own foul mouthed, reality bending film of course!

I have nothing against poop flinging!

Anyway, I am now keen to see the Evil Dead reboot. What the world needs is more Evil Dead, not more rehashes. But that gal has some big boots to fill. Bruce Campbell is a tough act to follow.
