Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

You may have noticed the poster for Fede Alvarez’s new Evil Dead film making some bold proclamations, describing itself as “The most terrifying movie you have ever seen” and according to this new very violent and gory featurette, that ain’t no bullsh!it neither.

Cowboys and Aliens star Abigail Spencer has swapped the extraterrestrial threats for something many people would find even more alien: family. The actress is joining the already cast Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Rose Byrne, Jane Fonda, Kathryn Hahn and Corey Stoll in Shawn “Real Steel” Levy’s dysfunctional family dramedy, This Where I Leave You. The film is an adaptation of Jonathan Stopper’s 2010 novel which sees Bateman as Judd, a member of the Foxman family, who due to the dying request of the Judd’s father will have to spend the 7 days following his funeral all living in one house as a family again, for the first time in years. Making the week even more unbearable for Judd is the conspicuous absence of his wife Jen (Spencer), whose recent affair with his boss, has now become public family knowledge.

Looks like Aldo Raines has some unfinished business in WWII. After the announcement last month that David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch) will be writing and directing Fury, a World War II tale following a 5 man tank crew in Europe during the final days of the conflict, Deadline is reporting that the production has now found its leading man in Brad Pitt. No other info has been given about Pitt’s character or the story.

Since Lost wrapped up in 2010, star Evangeline Lily hasn’t really shown up in much else except the dirty dreams of teenage boys. But she’ll soon be donning some funny ears to portray the Woodland elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.  For you Tolkienistas out there, who are scratching your heads trying to remember where she fits into the book, well she doesn’t. The character was created by Jackson and co-writer Fran Walsh specifically for the film adaptation, and now we finally have a proper look at her.

Keeping things Hobbity, if you had purchased the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Blu Ray, then you would have found within a special code that allowed you to participate in a special online live Q&A with director Peter Jackson last week. Along with answering some seriously detailed questions from fans, Jackson also revealed a couple of behind the scenes snippets for the second film. Unfortunately, if you didn’t have that special code, you would missed all of that as the recording wasn’t made available publicly. But now it has been released and you can check it out below.

Despite how Lourens worships at his feet, I’ve never been the biggest Tim Burton fan. And while Frankenweenie was cool, Dark Shadows definitely didn’t do him any favours. But his next directing gig has certainly, pardon the pun, caught my eye. Burton has been tapped by The Weinstein Company to direct Big Eyes, the true story biopic that’s been in development since 2010, about artist couple, Walter and Margaret Keane, who became famous for their paintings feature children with large eyes. After the pair divorced though, they went from famous to infamous as Margaret claimed that she was the true artist behind all the paintings, going so far as to attempt to prove it in an epic court case.

Along with Burton being placed behind the camera, original stars Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds have now been replaced by Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. I say “replaced by”, but what I actually mean is “levelled up into”.

Not much is known about Chris Nolan’s next project Interstellar, except the acid tripping logline that it’s about “a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding, man”. Okay, so I added that “man” in there, but it certainly sounded like it belonged, didn’t it?

Well thanks to the Star Tribune we can now at least put a face to this groovy road trip: Matthew McConnaughey. The Magic Mike star and professional surfer bum was recently rumoured to be attached to the film, but he confirmed his involvement to the news publication when he said – what else? – “I’m confirming.”

No other info was forthcoming which is pretty much par for the course on a Nolan production.

So in case you haven’t figured it out yet from all the trailers, TV spots, posters, images, synopses, cast interviews, director interviews and just about every news publication that covered it, a certain popular headlining actor whose name rhymes with Fanning Fakem doesn’t last very long in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. This is what we like to refer to around these parts as pulling an Executive Decision in honour of Steven Segal’s unexpectedly early departure in the 90’s action movie. And over the last couple years, there have been a number of movies that got Executive Decisioned as you can see by this infographic.

There are certain movies that have left audiences pondering on such vast mysteries such as the existence of the human soul or whether there truly is a high power. These are not things that keep me up at night. No, all I want to know is what the hell are actually supposed to do with the three shells in that bathroom in Demolition Man. Luckily, the folks at CineLinx share my sense of curiosity as they ask this and more in their article about 7 Questions in Movies We Want Answered.

So earlier in the week we showed you what would happen if dinosaurs could become Jedi. Now as every parent will tell you, the only thing more destructive than a rampaging Tyrannosaurus Rex, is a baby. So lets give them lightsabers and see what happens.
