Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

With Marvel’s brown pants inducing trailer for The Avengers stealing the Superbowl spotlight, a lot of other films barely got a mention. One of them being Battleship, the documentary about about Hollywood’s creative banckruptcy big-budget alien invasion film, based off the classic HASBRO boardgame, starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch and R&B singer-turned-first-time-actress Rihanna.

Judging by just how derivative of every other big budget sc-fi film of the last few years this film looks, I’m predicting that it will take a massive beating by the critics upon release. I’m also guessing that this would not be the death knell of Rihanna’s burgeoning career, as she’s never let a beating stop her before.

Empire Online has a pictorial up for the 25 Sexiest Characters In Cinema History. It doesn’t matter if you’re into midriff wearing space queens, precocious wizard school girls, emotionally stunted goth hackers or even lizard faced vampire strippers, they’ve covered all perversions preferences.

In honour of Horny Werewolf DayGammaSquad has a hilarious slideshow of 40 Geeky Valentines Day Cards. This is undoubtedly my favourites:

I am a massive Tenacious D fan, but even I will admit that Pick of Destiny was not a great film. Yes, it had some hilarious moments and featured some of the band’s best songs thus far, but it fell woefully short in a number of places. But it would seem that Jack Black and Kyle Glass – despite a 5 year hiatus – have not been completely put off by the film’s commercial and critical failure. The website for the band’s new album Rize Of The Fenix has gone live, and it shows an animated video as well as musical snippet (or statement, if you will) declaring that The D are back.

If I could go all Bruce Almighty for a day, I’d make it so that Jack Black never made another brain cell-murdering movie (here’s looking at you Gulliver’s Travels!) for as long as he lived and instead just produced album after album of rocktastic Tenacious D songs.

Animal activist group PETA are continuing their misplaced crusade against The Grey, by calling for a public boycott of Joe Carnahan’s survival film. The cause of all this attention is claims that in preparation for their roles, Carnahan requested that all the actors eat a stew made from wolf meat, so as to get into character. Star Liam Neeson apparently enjoyed it enough to go back for a second helping, IMDB reports.

PETA issued the following statement in response to the wolf-stew revelation:

“Neeson’s stance on kindness to animals is sorely out of step with the rest of the world… Don’t just shy away. Run away from The Grey.”

It’s exactly this type of myopic and pedantic activism that has caused many people (myself included) to lose all respect for PETA. Here’s a novel idea: How about, instead of making inevitably futile attempts at derailing a fictional film, they actually go out and find homes for all the real-world animals they kill every year. Oh sorry, I meant euthanize not kill. That makes it all OK, hey PETA?

And finally, onto something a lot less serious… Martin Scorcese’s highly praised Hugo is one of my most highly anticipated films of the year. By all accounts it is an awe-inspiring tale of wonder and delight, and now this new video featurette has been released, giving us an insight into the Magic of Hugo, and making the wait until the local release date even more unbearable:

And on that spellbinding note, I am out of here. I desperately need to see my travel agent to find me the next available flight to any country that has never heard of both Rihanna and PETA. I might need to lay low for a while.
