The Extras!

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Extras---divider-thin

Extras-bullet-points-micro3 We start today off on a cool note. Specifically the kind of coolness that detonates out in shockwaves of awesome when a Jaeger robot P-klaps a Kaiju. Pretty much everyone loved Pacific Rim this year, but that doesn’t mean that it was immune to criticism and goofs. Which you can see for yourself in yet another brilliant and honest trailer.

Extras-bullet-points-micro3 Even though the paradigm has shifted in recent years, there’s no worse job in a horror film than being cast as a lady. Just ask Kervyn. Those unlucky damsels are one scene away from becoming a machete kebab, leaving a few dudes to carry the torch and emerge scathed and with crippling agorophobia. Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has a different idea for a horror movie though, and is working on an all-female horror film, and has tapped Polly Stenham to script it for him.

Stenham recently spoke to the London Evening Standard, explaining why Refn was outsourcing his writing for once:

He’s got a lot of stick for doing films some people think are violently misogynistic. So he approached me with the idea of doing something different.

Extras-bullet-points-micro3 Young Adult novels aren’t the only kind of film exploitation genre out in force these days. Slap a few tough guy actors together, dress ’em up in military clothing and have them hunt something Al Quada related, and you’ve got a box office killer on the loose.

Peter Berg has just such a movie coming out soon, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, Ali Suliman, Alexander Ludwig, and Eric Bana on the hunt for a pesky terrorist. Here’s a behind the scenes video for Lone Survivor:

Extras-bullet-points-micro3 One animation move that I hope Marvel regrets, is cancelling cartoon series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and replacing it with Avengers Assemble, which is essentially the exact same jokes and gags from the 2012 film recycled to infinity and beyond. I’ve gone back to the anime series to get my kicks from there, but it looks like Disney also has their eye on the Asian market.
They’ve tapped their Japanese branch to make an anime series on the Avengers, called Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers. Here’s a synopsis for the show and a promo image that will break your heart and throw it through the space portal towards the Skrull armada.

The story will revolve around how The Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk together with the help of Spider-Man and a group of teens, will harness their respective fighting skills and superhuman powers to foil Loki’s scheme to take over the world. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will target boys in the 6-12 age group.
Extras-bullet-points-micro3 When I do the Monday Box Office Report, I usually always focus on the North American results. That’s because half the success of a movie can be judged on how audiences flock to an American theatre to watch. Overseas however, the Japanese box office is a pretty good measuring stick as well. And right now, that stick is beating American films senseless as Hollywood no longer dominates in the land of the rising sun according to Variety. In fact, the last movie to really do well, was foul mouthed teddy bear Ted.
Extras-bullet-points-micro3 Wibbly wobbly timey wimey time! If you’re as interested as we are in Doctor Who, then you might be keen to see An Adventure in Space and Time, which chronicles how Doctor Who got made way back in 1963. For that drama, several iconic scenes from the first Doctor Era have been recreated, which you can see for yourself below.

No offense to Wiliiam Hartnell, but since you’re dead, I’d dig to see future Doctor Peter Capaldi cross paths with his first incarnation if David Bradley portrays him.
Extras-bullet-points-micro3 Hey Entourage fans, still looking forward to film version of your favourite show? Well keep on dreaming, as production is more troubled than my waist line after a Christmas lunch. Right now, the biggest issue seems to be about cash, as the cast isn’t happy that Jeremy Piven is getting big bucks to return.
Extras-bullet-points-micro3If there’s one thing that I hate, it’s a trailer for a trailer. There’s more than way to hype a film, and I hate the fact that Captain America: The Winer Soldier, is going in the worst possible direction to do that. By the way, this quick rant was a teaser rant for a longer rant that will be arriving soon. Which also happens to be a preview rant.

Extras-bullet-points-micro3 And lastly, let’s talk about lairs. And by lair, I mean that one room we have that is dedicated to all kinds of cool materialism. And if you say man cave, I’ll punch your lights out. Now, no matter how cool our lair is, it’ll never be as awesome or as creepy as the one that director Guillermo Del Toro happens to own, which he calls Bleak House.
Check, My Crib, you focused on the wrong damn people for that series.
