Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Unfortunately, we have to kick off proceedings on a very sombre note today. Fan favourite acting veteran Dennis Farina has passed away at the age of 69. According to reports Farina, who became known for playing on-screen tough guys, passed away from a blood clot in his lung. He was a familiar face through his roles on TV in Law & Order and Crime Story, and in films like Midnight Run, Get Shorty and Snatch.

Rest in peace, “Cousin Avi”.

From one sad story to another. Disney’s Lone Ranger may currently be a woeful tragedy with critics and the box office, but star Johnny Depp is not too phased with all the negative press, especially when it comes to his “brown face” turn as native American sidekick Tonto.

“We always knew going into it there were going to be naysayers and that sort of thing but we’ve had the full support of the Comanche Nation, of the Apache Nation, of the Navajo and so many more of the indigenous people.

“If you take that and you hold that on one side and then some critic who wants to smash what he thinks is a blockbuster then I’ll take the other side any day.”

“I think critics were especially upset because it didn’t really tank, I think they were hoping for it to really take a dive.”

Well, Mr Depp, I think your definition of “tank” is a lot different to other people’s definition. After a month on the circuit, The Lone Ranger‘s has only recouped $147 million of it’s $215 million budget, and that’s not even including the rumoured $100 million+ that was spent on advertising.

EW have scored the first two posters for Bryan Singers mutantpalooza X-Men: Days of Future Post, and they’re twice as awesome due to some cool two-faced designs, featured the juxtaposed mugs of Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy as old/young Professor X, and Ian McKellan and Michael Fassbender as old/young Magneto.

Now you may need to take a seat since this next bit is a bit shocking: It turns out that there is actually more to the San Diego Comic-Con than just panels about movies! *GASP* I know, right?! And to prove it, JoBlo walked the floor to find Comic-Con’s Top 10 Coolest Booths.

Speaking of Comic-Con, without a doubt, the biggest single announcement out of there was that the Man of Steel sequel would see Superman crossing swords with a new Batman. They showed us the films logo, but what would it be called. Man of Steel punches The Dark Knight doesn’t quite have that zing to it. Turns out they’re keeping it pretty simple according to writer David S. Goyer.

“So over in Hall H at the Warner Bros., I guess most people know now, at the end of the Warner Bros. panel Zack came out and he brought Harry Lennix, who plays General Swanwick in Man of Steel and we –- actually, Harry read a bit from [The Dark Knight Returns] and so the next film we’re making, we’re already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015. We’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, it’s –- that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that’s happening”

CBM did some digging and found out that WB already has web domains registered for both combinations, but most importantly, they also have one for BatmanVsSupermanMovie.com. That was originally created back 2002, but it was then updated in August 2012, meaning that that’s probably our likeliest bet. What’s interesting is that Batman, who will probably be a new version of the character, gets primary billing.

Looks you can’t teach a member of the Chelonia genus new tricks. Some new set pics from the Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles reboot, has Alan Ritchson as Raphael wearing a public disguise that should be instantly recognisable to anybody that remembers the 1990 live action film.

When it comes to things other than flying sharks, I don’t have much faith in the SyFy network. I mean they can’t even spell their own name right. They also have a habit of cancelling any decent sci-fi series they have and replacing them with cooking shows. So it’s with much trepidation that I report that Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle, original producers on Terry Gilliam’s brilliantly twisted Oscar nominated 1995 film  Twelve Monkeys, are in the process of developing a TV series adaptation of the time-travel tale for SyFy.

The original saw Bruce Willis as a convict in a virus-ravaged future, who gets sent back in time (through some really kooky machinery) to discover the source of the viral-apocalypse, but instead ends up in a present-day mental institution with a twitching, bouncing off the walls Brad Pitt, who may just be more involved in Willis’ mission than anticipated.

If you like girls being badass, then you’ve certainly come to right place. No, I’m not talking about Darryn and his feminine wiles. A new clip has been released from Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, this one being a sizzle reel for Michelle Rodriguez’s character She, and her affinity for laying the smack down.

Man, that Ted from How I Met Your Mother sure is a moron. Instead of choosing some random girl that we don’t really care about to be the mother of his children, he could have picked Maria Hill, second-in-command of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now to add insult to injury, it’s been revealed that Cobie Smulders (who played Ms Hill in The Avengers), will also popping up on your TV screens again in the pilot and select subsequent episodes of Marvel/ABC’s upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Avengers writer/director and Agents exec producer Joss Whedon revealed why he wanted the actress on board again.

“I wanted very much to have Cobie in the pilot because as much as anyone else, she IS SHIELD. She’s cool and commanding, and has the dry humor that plays so well with Clark’s. Also, if she’s in it I get to hang out with Cobie.”

Oh that Whedon is smooth.

Completely distracted by all the Supermans, Batmans, and Ultrons of Comic-Con, I totally seemed to have overlooked the panel for Stuart Beattie’s I, FrankensteinLuckily JoBlo was there, and they took notes. One note in particular of special attention: When Beattie was asked why star Aaron Eckhart, who plays Victor Frankenstein’s legendary monster, isn’t very, well, monstrous (he looks like he was involved in a wrestling match with Mick Foley at worst), Beattie informed the crowd that in this version, the monster’s scars had actually almost healed up in the 200 years since his creation. Also, Aaron Eckhart is too good looking to make ugly. Apparently,

Poster makers Mondo have released a new poster for Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium. That’s it. I have nothing funny to say about this. Mondo posters are never a joke.

I am Jack’s graphic novel, apparently. Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club (most famously adapted by David Fincher for the screen) has revealed that he’s working on a sequel. Not as a book or a movie, but something in between: a graphic novel.

“It will likely be a series of books that update the story ten years after the seeming end of Tyler Durden.   Nowadays, Tyler is telling the story, lurking inside Jack, and ready to launch a come-back.  Jack is oblivious.  Marla is bored.  Their marriage has run aground on the rocky coastline of middle-aged suburban boredom.  It’s only when their little boy disappears, kidnapped by Tyler, that Jack is dragged back into the world of Mayhem.”

Palahniuk has indicated that he’s met with various creators for guidance, but there’s no set publisher yet, or a date set for the publication.

And now for something completely different. And by different, I mean gory, as Jonathan Rhys-Meyers rips off limbs and head and chomps down on necks in this first trailer for NBC’s new Dracula series. Maybe it’s just the Depeche Mode soundtrack, but this suddenly just grabbed my attention.

  1. A Fight Club book sequel, say it ain’t so! Leave it alone!
    Cool poster Elysium.
Depeche Mode FTW (late 80’s teenager) but Meyers as Dracula? Oldman for me thx.

EDIT: Neil Blomkamp is the best creative force working sci-fi cinema in the world atm imo.

A fight club graphic novel could be quite cool I reckon. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
