Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We kick off today with a trifecta of Bond related news. Firstly, here’s a new clip that might be a tad spoilerish, if you haven’t seen any of the other promos released thus far:

Next up, Dame Judi Dench is over at The Guardian talking about her lengthy career, playing Bond’s taskmaster M and how at 77 years old and with her 7th Bond outing about to be released she can still say “I never want to stop working.”

And then finally, the review embargo for Skyfall has finally lifted and the first reviews are in. And damn they’re looking impressive. The words “Best”, “Bond” and “Ever” are already being thrown next to each other with rather amazing frequency. The Daily Mail gave it the most interesting and intriguing blurb though:

Skyfall was a fantastic combination of 007 meets Bourne meets Spooks meets Home Alone.

I swear, if Bond dispatches Javier Bardiem’s Silva with marbles on the staircase and a greased up banister, it’s going to be an instant five stars from me.

Along with a newly revealed release date of October 25, 2013, come’s the newest poster for Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s At The World’s End, which tells you exactly what you’re in for with this movie.

Richard Wenk has made a name for himself writing, gritty and manly action movies in the form of 16 Blocks, The Mechanic and The Expendables 2, and now he’ll be taking on the manliest man to ever wear a leather speedo and some weird BDSM chestpiece: He-Man! Wenk will be rewriting the script for a proposed Masters of the Universe remake, which last we heard, Jon “Fast 5 & 6” Chu was still directing.

Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and the Boy That Lived (With Lots of Money), Daniel Radcliffe, will be teaming up for a made for TV adaptation of Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov’s first novel, A Young Doctor’s Notebook. Both Hamm and Radcliffe are huge fans of Bulgakov’s work, which is what prompted Hamm to start the project. The story is a semi-autobiographical tale detailing Bulgakov’s work as young doctor during the dawn of the Russian Revolution. Radcliffe will play the younger version of the doctor, while Hamm will play his older counterpart.

Looks like Gary Ross has pulled an escape act. Last we heard, heard the Hunger Games director’s next project was going to be an adaptation of the biographical “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero”, which painted the master escape artist as a British spy and debunker of con-artists and mystics, but now the L.A. Times is reporting that Anna Karenina and Hanna director, Joe Wright, has taken over the project.

A new poster was debuted at NYCC for the Chloe Moretz starring Carrie remake, which makes the puzzling decision of removing the main titular character’s name from the poster, and then telling you that you’re going to know her name.

If there’s one thing you get to learn pretty quickly once you start getting into comics, it’s that comic book characters rarely let a small annoyance like dying get in their way. You usually just wait for the dust to settle (which is sometimes even before the ink on the page is dry) before a “dead” character is brought back. And now it looks like this comic book bit of magic may just have been translated to the screen as well.

Marvel have revealed Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson – last seen being shish-kebabbed by Loki in The Avengers – will actually be returning for Joss Whedon’s live-action S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. This fits in with the movie, as Whedon used every trick in the book to not confirm Coulson’s death: we never actually see him die, just on the verge of it and we get given assurance of his death by Nick Fury, using Coulson’s blood stained collectible cards to prove his death and motivate the team, but it’s later revealed that Fury faked the collectible card bit.

Of course, this may not quite be a resurrection, as there have been some rumours that S.H.I.E.L.D. will be set before all the Marvel movies, which would mean that chronologically Coulson would not have been killed yet.

Here’s the new trailer for Marvel’s next animated feature film, Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United. And it looks crap. The art style is a copy of the type recently employed by the Marvel vs Capcom video game series, but while it may work for a few minutes of pugilist mayhem, it looks rather bad as a full movie. And don’t even get me started on Tony Stark’s voice. Ugh.

Ben Affleck may be returning to his Bostonian roots for his next film. Affleck is looking to adapt Live By Night, a novel by author Dennis Lehane, whose Gone Baby Gone Affleck adapted to much critical acclaim back in 2007. Live By Night is set during the American Prohibition era and follows a policeman’s son as he gets involved in organized crime. So essentially Ben Affleck’s Boardwalk Empire? Can I buy my ticket now please?

Well, this came out of nowhere. After a recent shortlist for Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s female lead was announced, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s name has appeared out of the blue as the front runner, according to Latino Review. Admittedly, she is easily more recognizable than the others on the list, so it makes sense that she would get major traction with the studio.

TV Guide has revealed that late night talk show host Conan O’Brien has been cast as the voice of late night talk show host Dave Endochrine in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 2. Wow, I wonder how they came up with that one? When O’Brien spoke to TV guide, he also revealed that we share in common the origin of our sense of humour: Looney Toons!

“I’ve got a great affection for animation. I’ve always been interested in drawing, and I grew up on the Warner Bros. cartoons — which is where I think I learned a lot of my comedy. I think I got a lot of my comedic timing from the Road Runner and Bugs Bunny cartoons.”

The E.T. blu ray release is just around the corner, and this little clip showing Henry Thomas’ audition to play Elliot will be included on it. And boy is it impressive. I’m pretty sure that Spielberg must have been grinning from ear to ear after seeing this.

“007 meets Bourne meets Spooks meets Home Alone”

I hate it when reviewers flaunt obscure movie knowledge or do the above to seem interesting.
