Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We start off today with a new clip from Taken 2, because well do we ever really need an excuse to watch Liam Neeson educate some Eastern Europeans in the art of dying violently? No, didn’t think so.

We’ve made no secret about the fact that we just about worship at the TARDIS altar of Doctor Who around here. So when another of our favourite directors, Peter Jackson, says that he would like to direct an episode of the long running British sci-fi show, we hope and pray to any any deities that will hear us that Stephen Moffat and the rest of the folks at the BBC have taken notice.

“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt [Smith]’s fantastic. Just name a time and place, and I’ll be there!”

Kick-Ass was an exceptionally violent comic, and while it’s movie counterpart certainly was not averse to some crimson, director Matthew Vaughn still toned down a bit.  Kick-Ass 2 is an even more violent comic than the first – way, way more violent. So once again it’s getting toned down according to star Aaron Johnson.

“There’s some really interesting journeys [that] our characters embark on.  I can’t really go too deep into it, but I’m really excited about it; we’ve got a great cast.  There are some really disturbing things in the comic book which we’re not gonna put in, I think for the better.  Yet it’s got all the elements there and probably more, it’s got a bit of narrative and story to be told, so it’s great.”

Don’t want to spoil anything for anybody that hasn’t read the book, but I’m almost certain that excised bits he’s talking about would be a violent gang rape scene.

Empire have got a couple new images for Martin “In Bruges” McDonagh’s new followup, Seven Psychopaths. Here’s one showing off 3/7 Psychos in the form of Collin Farell, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken.

Casey Affleck is about to get super-cool. He’ll be starring in Race to the South Pole, Warner Bros’ new true adventure tale that documents English explorer Robert Falcon Scott as he races to become the first man to reach the South Pole in the 20th Century. Casey’s older brother Ben, along with frequent partner Matt Damon will be producing.

Plus size comedian and Bridemaids star Melissa McCarthy is apparently considering a role in The Hangover 3. At this point it’s unclear what her role would be, but judging from her past movie roles, I’m guessing that some of bodily function would be involved.

It seems that FOX is employing Tyler Durden. A North Carolina mother was horrified to discover that the copy of Disney animated movie Lilo and Stitch that she had recorded and was playing for her 3 kids contained 6 minutes of hardcore pornography.

I shouldn’t laugh at this at. I really shouldn’t. But well, the 5-year old was cryinBWAH HA HA HA HA!

Meet Vexie and Hackus, the first revealed members of the “Naughties” – voiced by Christina Ricci and JB Smoove respectively – that will be facing off against those little blue Belgian dwarfs in The Smurfs 2. EW has the pic along with a new plot synopsis for the sequel:

In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

Earlier this week, we brought you the casting news of Freddie Highmore as the young Norman Bates in the new TV series prequel to Hitchcock’s Psycho, Bates Motel. Well, it looks like the Motel is filling up quickly now, as The Last Airbender star Nicola Peltz has been cast as Bradley (yes, the girl’s name is Bradley) Kenner, one of four girls in young Norman’s high school class.

Having never been able to get myself to watch The Last Airbender, I really don’t have much of an opinion either way to this casting.

James Cameron want to put some more Asian faces in the Avatar sequels. Why? Because it’s good to show some diversity? No, because he wants their money.

“Within five years, China could easily be as big a gross-revenue market for film as North America, and there are very specific economic incentives for having both Chinese content and Chinese co-production. We are already funded on Avatar 2 and 3, but if we qualify as a co-production, there might be some incentives in the percentage of revenue we can take out of China. We are running the numbers to see if that makes sense.”

“For Avatar, we can certainly use Chinese actors as performance capture actors because any accent issues will hide within the Na’vi accent. So we can have Chinese Na’vi; [and in the live-action sequences] we can also have Chinese actors who speak English in the film. We are projecting a future in Avatar, and if you project that future out, it is logical that there would be a number of Chinese amongst the contingent on Pandora.”

JustJared has scored a whole heap of new on-set photos for Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, showing off Johnny Depp in full costume. So if checking out a topless guy in face paint with a dead bird on his head walking, jumping and laying around is your thing then… well, then you may need to seek some professional medical help, but while you do that you can get your last fix from these pics.

While Joss Whedon is currently the man with the plan for the future of Marvel’s cinematic universe, there was time when his further involvement was very much up in the air still. Whedon spoke to Co.Create where he explained his initial reluctance:

“There’s a business aspect to it and I would be disingenuous not to say that, but the question for me is, Do I have another story to tell about these people? So we worked on the business side of it and I didn’t think it was going to happen–I was like ‘I’m never going to do this again.’ But once they worked on the business aspect of it I thought that seems fair and cool, so, the question was, Do I have another thing to say? I was in London and I went to a pub and had some fish & chips & a pint and started writing in my notebook. I’m writing if I was going to do this what would I say & 40 minutes later I filled the notebook. So I text my agent & said to make the deal. I’m so in love with that universe & the characters & the way they were played & I have so much more I want to do with them. I know I can’t match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film & that’s what I’m excited about, that’s the new room of fear I’m entering now.”

The 1984 comedy, The Flamingo Kid, saw Matt Dillon as a recent high school graduate who takes a job at a beach resort, The Flamingo Club, and now as with just about everything else from the 80’s, it will be remade by Walt Disney. Just because. It will also be produced by Brett Ratner. Also just because.

It’s just a couple of months before Awards season is upon us again, and with Awards season come horrible, awkward and embarrassing speeches. But thanks to this new ad campaign for the Emmy’s starring actress Parker Posey, those should be a thing of the past.

Looks like Taken 2 is really amping up the action. Good move.
