Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Rah-rah-rah-raaaah-rah-rah-raaaah! THUNDER! No, that’s how I whimper in a storm, but rather a classic AC/DC tune stuck in my head today. Appropriate though, as a new TV spot has been released for Thor: The Dark World. There’s virtually nothing new here, but I’m a Thor fanboy so I’ll post just about anything. Sad but true.

If you follow all the major players in the Hollywood press circles on Twitter, you would have noticed that since yesterday they’ve been talking about some major casting scoop for Star Wars: Episode VII. Or rather, they’ve been talking around a major scoop, as nobody wants to be the first to reveal anything without some more confirmation. As is so often the case in these things though, it seems that Latino Review have been the first ones to blink. They’re saying that Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Rachel Anne Hurd (Peter Pan) have auditioned for Episode VII roles. As to what those roles are, Hollywood.com has a very nice breakdown of the possibilities, with the likeliest for Pettyfer being Ben Skywalker, Luke Skywalker’s son with Mara Jade, the ex-Hand of the Emperor that eventually becomes his wife in the Star Wars Expanded Universe stories.

What’s interesting is that that Pettyfer is 7 years older than when we last see Ben in the EU, which means that if true, this could place Episode VII right at the start of that century long narrative no-man’s land that sits between the New Jedi Academy Era and the Star Wars Legacy Era. This is the same period I picked as the best time to place the new Episodes, as it allows Disney/Lucasfilm to tell brand new stories, while still respecting that the EU is completely canon (which they have said that it is, several times in the past).

The spanner in the works here, is that the likeliest casting for Hurd, is that of Jaina Solo, Han and Leia’s daughter. The problem is that Jaina is far older at that point of the timeline than Hurd, which could mean that they’re not treating the EU as canon and are changing the story. Or, you know, this is nothing but a rumour.

Or or, this is actually not the major news scoop everybody is going on about.

And for people who can make stuff move with their minds, to a movie that goes into a man’s mind (segue like a boss!) with this new poster for Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

If you weren’t a fan of Star Trek Into Darkness in cinema, you’re going to like it even less on Blu Ray. In a completely baffling move, it seems that Paramount have stripped out all the great features/extras you would normally find on a film’s Blu Ray release, and have instead licenced them as retailer exclusives. Want the film’s director’s commentary? Then you’re going have to get it from iTunes. Want that Behind the Scenes featurette on the film’s VFX? Got to go to Target and get that bonus disc. And so on, and so forth, and this whole thing just makes me too sad to even be angry.

So, like, Justin Timberlake thinks he could be a great Riddler. No, seriously, I’m not making this stuff up.

“I have no aspiration to ever be a superhero in a movie … Now, a villain! I’ll tell you the villain I want to play more than anything because I grew up loving Batman, funnily enough, is The Riddler. The Riddler is my favorite villain. The Riddler was like a sociopath. He was proper crazy. So if I’m gonna play crazy, I’m wanna play proper crazy.”

Rebecca Hall, last seen being completely superfluous to the story in Iron Man 3, thinks that women are not getting their dues when it comes to playing the baddies.

“There’s been a sort of trend for awhile of people writing strong women as women who are morally right, which is so uninteresting. It’s no fun and frankly it’s a massive disservice to womankind. It boxes us in to making these sort of slightly dull, virtuous choices… We need to be villains too. We need to be messy and sloppy and three-dimensional and complicated, and that’s writing a strong woman.”

Hey, TV networks! Please listen to this impassioned plea from Kevin Spacey – who recently earned rave reviews in the critically lauded Netflix original series, House of Cards – on how to change your series models. Also, he’s [18 YEAR OLD SPOILER ALERT!] Keyzer Soze, so you just know he’ll eat your children or something if you don’t do what he says.

If there’s one movie that I’m willing to sacrifice Darryn for (virgins make the best sacrifices) to ensure that it turns out as good as it looks that it could, it would be Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Chris Pratt ,who plays team leader Peter Quill, would like assure us that it’s going to be good, really really good.

“I think we’re getting good stuff. I don’t know what to say about it other than it might be…Oh! It’s the greatest movie of the 21st century! That’s what I’ll say. It’ll be the Citizen Kane of movies other than Citizen Kane.”

Pratt also went on to say that Quill will be getting to a have sex with “a couple” aliens. Maybe that’s what has him so excited?

If you’ve curious as to the taste of humble pie, might I suggest you enquire about it over on Reddit, where they’ve had to eat a whole big mountain of it last night. On Wednesday a story popped up on the hugely popular site about how one of it’s moderators went all Sherlock Holmes and apparently sniffed out that a number of very positive comments on the site about the upcoming Ethan Hawke/Selena Gomez film, Getaway, was actually being made by Warner Bros employees themselves in a lame attempt at promotion. Reddit mods kicked up a stink, calling out everybody and his dog at WB for using underhanded promo tactics. Except, none of it was true, as Reddit has now had to admit rather embarrassingly.

No, I also don’t know why this new international poster for 47 Ronin looks like it was made using an Android phone wallpaper.

Looks like Superman and Batman have found a home: Detroit, Michigan. Zack Snyder is vacating his normally preferred Vancouver, Canada to shoot his Man of Steel sequel in the Motor City.

“Detroit is a great example of a quintessential American city, and I know it will make the perfect backdrop for our movie. Detroit and the entire state of Michigan have been fantastic collaborators, and we are looking forward to working together on this film.”

The production is expected to create 426 new jobs, make use of over 500 local vendors and bring in over $8 million dollars on just hotel costs and out of town cast and crew needs. This comes as great news for the city as it has had to declare itself bankrupt not too long ago. Yes, the entire city.

The Daniel Espinosa directed Child 44, starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Joel Edgerton and Gary Oldman, has already been shooting for about two months now, but it seems like it’s never too late for a bit of a cast shakeup. Much like a porno, actually. Philip Seymour Hoffman has apparently dropped out of his supporting role in the adaptation of Tom Rob Smith’s novel about “a military cop (Hardy) investigating a series of child murders in 1950s Stalinist Russia”.

So who do you get to replace an actor of Hoffman’s caliber at the last minute? Simple, you just go and get Vincent Cassel, his thinner, darker haired, taller and more French counterpart. Okay, so they’re actually nothing alike, except for the fact that they’re both superb actors, which is perfectly fine in my book.

Ever watched a film and thought, “I wonder if the writers were drunk when they wrote this?”, or “Surely, [INSERT ACTOR NAME HERE] has to be drunk to be starring in this!”. Well wonder no more! Because the short film you’re about to see, Star Drunk, was indeed written by drunk people, and also stars drunk actors. That’s kind of it’s gimmick. And it’s superb!

So if I download Star Trek Into Darkness illegally instead of buying it, am I doing something immoral? By the sound of it, I am going to get the movie only in anycase if I hand over my hard earned cash…
