Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed today!

Entertainment Weekly has a new Dark Knight Rises image as their cover, showing us a clear and detailed look of the Batsuit. They also have a new trio of previously unreleased DKR images

Now that production has resumed on Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, it looks like James Badge Dale (Rubicon, The Pacific) is set to play the older brother of the masked Western Hero, played by The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer. Dale’s character, Dan Reid, was an ex-soldier and popular Western legend himself.

Hustler Video is making a porn parody of Steven Spielberg’s classic shark-attack film, Jaws, tittled This Ain’t Jaws XXX. And if that wasn’t disturbing enough, it will also be shot in 3D. You can certainly expect somebody to use the line “We’re going to need a bigger [INSERT GENITALS OF CHOICE HERE]”

Total Film has 5 new posters for the 3D re-release of Star Wars Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. I saw the 3D trailer of the film over the weekend, and quite frankly, the added 3D effects are nothing special at all. In fact, unless you’re one of the 3 people in the world that hasn’t seen this yet, I would happily advise you to give it a pass. And that’s coming from an uber Star Wars geek who actually likes all the prequels. Yes, even Episode 1.

There’s a new clip online of Chronicle, the found-footage style film about what happens when a bunch of irresponsible guys (read: every boy in high school) gets given super powers. It may sound like a goofy premise, but as you can see by the trailer we covered, the story takes a much darker turn.

Universal is looking to capitalize on the success of it’s Bourne franchise, but adapting another of Robert Ludlum’s novels, The Sigma Protocol. This was the last novel that Ludlum wrote on his own before his death in 2001.

In Zurich, Switzerland, American investment banker Ben Hartman has arrived on holiday when he chances upon old friend Jimmy Cavanaugh– a madman who’s armed and programmed to assassinate. In a matter of minutes, six innocent bystanders– and Cavanaugh– are dead. But when his body vanishes, and his weapon mysteriously appears in Hartman’s luggage, Hartman is plunged into an unfathomable nightmare, and suddenly finds himself on the run. Meanwhile in Washington, D.C., Anna Navarro, field agent for the Department of justice, has been asked to investigate the sudden– seemingly unrelated– deaths of eleven men throughout the world. The only thing that connects them is a secret file, over a half-century old, linked to the CIA, and marked with the same puzzling codename: Sigma.

But as Anna follows the connecting thread, she finds herself in the shadows of a relentless killer who is one step ahead of her, victim by victim. Together she and Hartman must uncover the diabolical secrets long held behind the codename, Sigma. It will threaten everything they think they know about themselves and confirm their very worst fears…

Just don’t expect any super-spy martial arts ala Jason Bourne though, as script writer Irwin Winkler attests:

“What we are really hoping to do is create a franchise, built around this ordinary guy who gets caught up in international intrigue, and who teams with this operative who is declared a rogue by the CIA,” said Winkler. “Unlike Bourne, who is a trained assassin, this is an innocent guy traveling in Europe who gets in way over his head. And it has all the great Ludlum intrigue.”

And finally, TopFilm has compiled a list of 50 original movies coming out in 2012. These are films that are not sequels, or based on existing properties in any form. And there are couple of great looking ones on there.

That’s all for today, folks. Hope you enjoy your weekend. I’ve planned a classic sci-fi blu ray marathon for Saturday, comprised of The Omega Man, Forbidden Planet, Soylent Green and 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s going to be epic, technicolour awesomeness!

Chronicle looks pretty cool, pity about the horrible “found footage” format.

I reckon The Phantom Menace 3D is going to be evry bit as kak as the original film bar for Darth Maul, he’s still awesome!
