Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

While most trailers earn my burning rage nowadays for giving away too many scenes that you should only be seeing in the theatre, this new trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is different: It gives away scenes that you won’t be seeing in the theatre. This is essentially an extended version of the last trailer, with footage taken from deleted scenes added to the mix. While some movies do this due to last minute changes, this is actually being done intentionally here. Just another slightly off-kilter marketing tactic to one of those most interesting films of the year.

Elizabeth Olsen (you know, the other Olsen girl, the one with actual talent) is currently acting up a storm in Hollywood and will soon be seen in Spike Lee’s Americanized remake of Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy. She spoke to Empire Online where she revealed that Lee wasn’t just doing an English version of the celebrated film, but also taking the story back to its roots:

“It’s not trying to redo the film – it’s coming at it from a different view. As well as focusing on the primary source of the Korean film, for our film there’s also the Japanese Manga, so we’re using the primary source of the illustrated novel, really.”

“It’s going to be a different story, just because, one, it takes place in a non-descript city in America, and, two, it’s ten years later, so technology is different. It’s practicalities that have had to change.”

Warner Bros have set a release date March 14, 2014 for All You Need is Kill. Directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the sci-fi film plays as a sort of Groundhog-Independence Day, as Cruise’s army grunt gets killed minutes into his first combat mission against the alien forces that have invaded Earth. But then, mysteriously, he awakes up again at the start of the day, doomed to experience the same day and death, over and over again.

If you’re not a videogame enthusiast, then some of the extended cast for Dreamworks’ upcoming animation film, Wreck-It Ralph, may be a bit of a mystery for you. Luckily, ComingSoon.net have come to your rescue with their rundown of all the various characters. Don’t worry Darryn, they have pictures!

Here’s a new clip from the Red Dawn remake that sees a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth, and pre-Hunger Games Josh Hutcherson try to fight back against a foreign invasion force in suburban America. The film’s been sitting on the shelf for a few years, so this is just to remind us, yes, it’s still coming out.

Mike Tyson, Audrina Patridge (The Hills)and Kendra Wilkinson (Girls of the Playboy Mansion) have all joined the cast for Scary Movie 5. Expect at least one gag of somebody’s ear being bitten off. Hopefully followed by two gags of Kendra Wilkinson’s cleavage.

Following on from the news last week that Twentieth Century Fox has appointed Mark Millar as a consultant on all their Marvel comic properties, the prolific comic book writer issued this statement on his Millarworld forums:

It’s way too early to talk about plans just yet, but as you can imagine the idea here is to make exactly the kind of superhero movies you and I want to see most. There literally isn’t a more talented bunch of film-makers to be working with and the team at Fox are incredibly excited about this bold new direction too. I also want to post this here to say thanks for the hundreds of emails I woke up to this morning and the thousand-plus tweets I got overnight from well-wishers. I wish I had time to reply to them all today – I usually reply to most of my tweets @mrmarkmillar – but this morning was an AVALANCHE and so I just wanted to so a big thanks, that I’ve read every one and that they’re hugely appreciated. A highlight, I think, was well-wishes from Stan The Man himself. That’s like the Pope sending a message. Couldn’t have been more exciting.

But my biggest thanks has to go to director Joe Carnahan, I think. It was Joe who suggested me to the bigwigs at Fox for this role as he’s always been a supporter of what I did in comics like The Ultimates and so on. He and Matthew Vaughn – both of whom have a very strong relationship with Fox – really pushed for me to get this gig and I just want to publicly thank them both for their support.

Serving as even more official confirmation of last week’s announcement, here’s the cover art that will be used for pop singer sensation Adele’s Skyfall theme song.

Keeping things 007, there’s a rumour going around that, despite the fact that we still more than a month to go for James Bond’s 23rd adventure, the villain for his 24th outing has already been found. The man to lock horns with Her Majesty’s greatest spy? Why, none other than Benedict Cumberbatch.

This is still firmly in the flimsiest of rumours department though, and could just be the ravings of some fanboy who wants to see James Bond take on Sherlock Holmes. I could be that fanboy.

Talking of Cumberbatch being a villain, the English actor will be seen as the big bad in next year’s Star Trek Into Darkness, but will be an even bigger big bad in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, as he provides the voice and motion capture for the dragon Smaug. He spoke to Total Film about what that experience was like:

“You just have to lose your s–t on a carpeted floor, in a place that looks a little bit like a mundane government building. It was just me as well, with four static cameras and all the sensors. Then the boys at Weta work their magic… It’s very freeing, once you put the suit on and the sensors. I’ve never felt less encumbered, actually. And you have to be. You have to be free.”

Despite what may have been reported all over the net, Johnny Depp will not be starring Wes Anderson’s next film Grand Budapest Hotel. The director himself clarified the issue. Then promptly when and confused matters on all the casting announcements that have been made:

“You know, the Internet has a way of announcing things on its own [laughs]. You will find that even though I’m very aware of the cast that has been announced on its own devices, you’ll never find me saying who’s in the movie. Or, as far as I know, anybody else. I really don’t know where it all comes from. In fact, Johnny is somebody who I would love to work with at some point, but he’s not going to be in this movie. But I actually have not put the cast out — I have not announced the cast. We have quite a great cast.

Before Larry became Lana, Andy and Larry Wachowski were always collectively credited on projects as the Wachowski Bros. After the sex-change though, some publications chose to refer to them as the more gender correct Wachowski siblings. Well, that is when they actually called them anything at all, seeing as how the pair pretty much removed themselves from the public limelight. Well they’re now back in a big way with their highly ambitious sci-fi epic, Cloud Atlas, and they’d just like you to know that you can now address them as the “Wachowski Starship”. I am hoping and praying that they were just influenced by their science fiction leanings as well as loving to belt out “We built this City” at kareokes, and not because they’re fans of Nicki Minaj.
