Dark City director Alex Proyas’ next project will be an adaptation of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola’s graphic novel, Joe Golem and the Drowning City. The graphic novel is described as “a supernatural-steampunk illustrated [story] that follows an orphaned teenage girl, an aging magician, a lunatic scientist, a Victorian occult detective, and the stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem—a man whose strange dreams hint of a history he has forgotten–as they struggle for the fate of an alternate 1970s lower Manhattan. In this vision, lower Manhattan sank into the water during a catastrophic earthquake in 1925, leaving those unwilling or unable to abandon it to make a new life in streets turned to canals. “

The National Lampoon’s Vacation reboot, now just called Vacation, is packing it’s last few suitcases and is just about to hit the calamity strewn road, as Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover) has been cast in the lead as the now grown-up Rusty Griswold who drags his family on a road trip from hell. Hi jinks, naturally, ensue.
Sandton City Ster Kinekor movie goers were in for a, shall we say, small surprise last night as they waited in the confectionery line. Diminutive Leon Schuster sidekick Alfred Ntombela, who can currently be seen in Mad buddies, had shown up to help out staff as a way of showing his appreciation for the movie’s box off success.
‘Mad Buddies is doing great at the box office and this is one way I am showing my appreciation to the South African audience!’
Somehow, I get the feeling that if I was in that queue, and he had read my review, I would have received a box of popcorn so stale that you could cut glass with it.
Japan’s first and most famous Manga superhero team, Cyborg 009, will not only finally be getting an English language adaptation from Archaia Comics, but the publisher’s parent company are also looking to develop the concept into a feature film. I’ve heard of Cyborg 009 before and while it sounded cool, I’ve never read it due to the whole, you know, not being able to read Japanese thing.
We’ve heard that World War Z had been sent back to the drawing board with Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof being asked to rewrite the film’s final act. Turns out though that Lindelof can’t find time in his busy schedule of not answering people’s questions, and has handed the writing reins over to Cabin in the Woods director and Cloverfield writer, Drew Goddard.
Well, actually let me rather say that he “had” handed over the reins, as Goddard may have turned out a draft but then pulled out due to also not having enough time. Paramount have now tapped Christopher McQuarrie – who just wrote and directed Jack Reacher for the studio – to finalize what the other two writers have started. Based on how true to the source Jack Reacher appears to be (spoiler: not very), I’m sure that World War Z fans are not going to be too happy about this.

It’s been known in the industry for a while now, but now it’s finally official: Chronicle director Josh Trank will be directing FOX’s planned Fantastic Four reboot. I liked Chronicle. A lot. Which is the exact opposite of my feelings regarding the previous two attempts at bringing the Fantastic Four to the big screen, which is why this is one reboot that I can truly get behind. Get Jonathan Hickman to consult on the script, and you’ll make me one very happy geek.
A poster popped up on the web last night, claiming to be the teaser poster for Jose Padilha’s Robocop reboot. No official confirmation yet, but I’m hoping it’s not, because it’s, well, crap.
It looks like the guys over at Pajiba are operating at 88 mph and generating 1.21 jigawatts as they’ve managed to put together the Complete Box Office Release Schedule for Summer 2019. And I don’t know about you guys, but I think they’re on the money. Hey, Pajiba, What do you know about lotto tickets?

Zack Snyder dropped in at his old school, the Art Center of College of Design, to talk about his career, and in the process dropped some info on the casting process for his upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel.
“We had about 500 guys initially. We did this massive auditioning madness. It got down to the usual suspects in a pretty quick order. Henry Cavill was actually the first one we physically tested on film. We actually tested him in the Christopher Reeve Superman suit. And that was a big deal. That’s a hard suit to pull off. Trust me. If you’re just standing there in that suit, it’s dodgy. It felt like we just bought it a costume shop. Plus, there’s no mask. I’ve been around a few superhero costumes, and it’s weird because when you’re in the Superman costume it’s just you from the neck up. And somebody just combed your hair. But Henry came out of the trailer when we were shooting a test and everybody thought Okay, that’s Superman. He was awesome and did a great job.”
While Andrew Garfield is currently swinging around in his old pyjamas, Tobey Maguire has been quietly expanding his resume. He’ll soon be seen in Baz Lurhman’s The Great Gatsby and it’s now been confirmed that he will round out the cast of Jason Reitman’s (Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult) next project, Labor Day, which “follows a 13-year old boy named Henry from New Hampshire who learns life lessons over a five-day Labor Day weekend.”
I love stop-motion animation, and sure many of you do too. It always amazes me at just how much time and effort goes into making these incredibly emotive characters. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, then prepare to be impressed with this video for Dreamworks’ upcoming stop-motion film, ParaNorman.
