For years, Karen Gillan was known as the fiery-haired and -hearted “girl who waited”, Amy Pond, on BBC’s Doctor Who. But with her role on the long running British sci-fi show (greatest sci-fi show EVER, I might add) coming to an end in 2012, she’s moved on up to bigger things in Hollywood. She landed a major gig as the “girl who was an evil, bald cyborg space pirate”, Nebula, in Marvel’s upcoming eclectic space opera Guardians of Galaxy, but for her next feature film, the Jason Blum produced Oculus, she’ll simply be the “girl who had the ginger scared right out of her!”, as can be seen in this first teaser trailer.

Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is replaying itself.

Yes, that is indeed Katee “Starbuck” Sackhoff with the bad case of creepy glowy eye syndrome at the end there, in case you wondering. Oculus, which is directed by Mike Flanagan and c0-written by Flanagan and Jeff Howard, made its debut at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where it actually garnered mostly favourable reviews. The film is actually an expansion of a 30-minute short film that Flanagan made back in 2006, which won plenty of acclaim on the festival circuit back then. While the trailer for this makes it seem almost like a by-the-book ghost story, this longer version apparently is a “cleverly complex” and “impressively intricate supernatural thriller” according to folks who saw it last year.

Oculus stars Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Brenton Thwaites, James Lafferty, and Rory Cochrane, and will be spooking up cinemas on April 11, 2014.
