Roland Emmerich, you sneaky bugger! All this time we thought that he was ripping off Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen, but in reality, whereas Olympus is a balls to the wall, straight faced action movie, Emmerich’s own “terrorists take over the White House” flick is actually a buddy cop comedy! Except that one of those buddies just so happens be the President of the United States of America. Who shoots RPG’s at people.

In Columbia Pictures’ “White House Down,” Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

Despite the fact that I couldn’t stand him in the early part of his career, Channing Tatum has grown on me. Clearly not as much as some women wish he would grow on them, but you know what I mean. After his hilarious turn in 21 Jump Street, he seems to once again be putting his physical comedy skills on display here, and it appears to definitely work as he does his best John McClane impersonation (right down to getting his own personal white vest and bespectacled black civilian partner).

White House Down will be blowing up Washington and your local cinema on June 28, 2013.
