Despite how some of you (heathens) may feel, Harry Potter is an incredible pop culture phenomenon much beloved by millions. While we will be returning to JK Rowling’s magical world very soon on the big screen courtesy of the upcoming spinoff/prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, that movie will of course not be featuring Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest of the gang. And with Rowling also having wrapped up the main book series years ago, there’s only one way to really get your next Potter fix: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Announced last year, Cursed Child is a stage play production co-conceived by Rowling herself and is going to be a sequel set 19 years after the events of the original series, focusing on grown up versions of the gang, who now have kids of their own – including Harry and Ginny’s Albus, the titular cursed child. And yesterday the first official pics of the cast in costume/character were revealed online!

You may recall that quite a stink was kicked up earlier in the year when it was revealed that a black actress, Noma Dumezweni, would be playing the role of Hermione, who thanks to the performance of Emma Watson in the movies, most fans have always thought of as white. At the time, Rowling defended the decision by saying that she had never specifically mentioned Hermione’s skin colour in the books, just her frizzy hair (also, rectroactively making her black adds an even nastier layer to the slur of “mudblood”). Either way, I actually think the cast looks fine.

As a huge Pot-head, I wish I could actually be seeing this in person, so is anybody willing to help a brother out with a plane ticket to London where the play will be having its first public preview in a month?! Thought not, you cheapos. Guess I will have to settle the reading script book which will be released on Harry’s birthday on 31 July.

You can read more about what the cast and creators think of tackling these iconic characters over HERE and HERE on Pottermore. Here’s the official synopsis:

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

I’m all for diversity but the race switch is rather jarring after seeing a character grow up on the screen in front of you over the course of the film series. I’m sure it’s just for the play as it would be difficult to justify such a massive change when WB decide to milk that cash cow yet again.
