First footage for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter online

This weekend – thanks to CBS news and random people’s cellphones – we saw the first few video snippets for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter pop up online. Two films that are very eagerly anticipated but will probably both suck.

And no, I’m not just referring to their vampiric subject matter.

First up is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a film that my colleague Darryn just cannot wait to see. Me? Not so much. With Timur Bekmembatov (Wanted, Night Watch, Day Watch) at the helm, I know that it’s certainly going to look stylish, but I have a feeling that the crazy concept may just come off as really cheesy.

The clip is courtesy of CBS news. They do an interview with Benjamin Walker, who plays the Nosferatu hunting president, and interspersed in the footage are clips from the film. Unfortunately these clips are doing nothing to change my initial prediction for the film, especially the Resident Evil-esque spinning slow-mo jumping.

This weekend also saw Target stores around the US debuting exclusive footage from Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. Naturally, as soon as the screens lit up, cellphones were whipped out to bootleg them.

Now I’ve made no bones about the fact that I think the entire Twilight saga is a bubbling pool of excrement, and I’d rather not have humanity subjected to its inanity for one second further. However everybody has different tastes, and I know that our audience consists of people that really enjoy this soppy codswallop. So here you go, @flmboy:

I’d rather watch Abe Lincoln lumberjacking Edward into non-existence to be honest.. can you organise that?

Guys, come on?  What is the point to this website?  Is it to deliver news in an unbiased way, or is it one of those “let’s knock twilight because it is the in thing to do these days” sites?  Seriously, this is getting old.
Yes, I do get the idea of free speech and such, and no, I am not asking that you like Twilight.  But come on, if I read an article filed under ‘NEWS’ I expect to get an unbiased bloody article.  Keep your personal opinions of a movie out of a news article.  It just smacks on unprofessional journalism…

The point of this website is to give credible and substantial opinions on the latest news and gossip in the movie industry along with reviews and awesome trailers.

Unfortunately we are not in the business of unbiased or non-personal news which can be found in the standard mainstream media.

There is this thing called opinion pieces, where a writer can give his opinion on stuff as much as he wants.  He can belittle or praise the subject of his piece to his sweet little hearts content.  And I know then that this is the opinion of the writer.

News is meant to inform.  I want to know that for example, new footage of Twilight has been released. Do you really think this article succeeded in delivering its message if it leaves the reader seething with rage because the author cannot keep his opinion of a movie where it belongs?

And also, what do you think it does for the readership of this site if you piss off hordes of fans in the name of non-personal news?

You may not like Twilight, and your band of merry men may like it even less, but if one looks at the money, there are quite a few people out there that spent their money so far on Twilight.   And I think it is safe to say that quite a few people are going to fork out their money on the Breaking Dawn dvd/blu ray that is due for release soon and even more will fork out money when Breaking Dawn part 2 releases later this year.  Not only in the US, but locally as well.

Now if I follow your reasoning, you are quite happy to alienate all these people, and rather have them not visit your site at all, all in the name of personal news?

How does your site differ then from a glorified blog with guest writers?

You have a valid point and my wife gets riled up when I talk badly about Twilight at home as well, but mind you she does agree that the movies in general are terrible and don’t stick accurately to the story at all.

Maybe we should change the category as news on TheMovies was never meant to be an unbiased recital of what is happening in the world. It’s soul purpose has always been about giving credible writers a free platform to discuss their feelings on the latest goings on in the movie world.

The idea is not to alienate people but to give people an insight into the minds and personalities of the people who contribute to the site.

As for whether we are simply a glorified blog with guest writers, well the difference in my humble opinion is that news and the publishing industry in general has moved on and their is a large crowd of under serviced readers who aren’t looking for unbiased news.

What would be fantastic though is if you were interested in doing a guest post on why the Twilight series is a great addition to the film industry at large or anything really.

On the other site Kervyn has previously been riled at me for daring to state that Inception was a bog standard film attempting and failing to be a cerebral experience. Noelle’s also going to have a heart attack when I post about how Driver really was a perfect example of how a script that could barely fill up a serviette doesn’t qualify as a real film even if you shoehorn in a thousand dramatic pauses.

Hmmm… the question is can you afford me?

If you are serious about the guest post, I’ll write it.  I would love to.

It’s highly unlikely that I can afford you but I’m dead serious about posting a guest post if you are willing… drop me a line gavin @ themovies.co.za and I’ll chuck it through our automated editing machine (Geoff) and we’ll get it up 🙂

Sorry if I offended you, that was the never the intention. However, like Gavin mentioned, on TheMovies.co.za the personality (and personal preferences) of writers will often come through in articles.

Now personally, I prefer to read articles like that, instead of just bland regurgitation of whatever the Associated Press puts out. The advantage of this approach is that you as a reader can easily come to identify those writers whose opinions more closely mirror your own and therefore when you read one of their reviews you can instantly know whether it’s a trustworthy report or not.I’m definitely not going go out of my to drive people away from the site, however I also do not want to just become a news repeater.

But I highly advise you to take Gavin up on his offer. I always feel that the more (keyword) informed opinions that we have the better.

I get that.  Seriously I do.  But look at a hell of a lot of articles that mention vampires in some form of another on this site.  And I can almost guarantee there is going to be some stab at twilight, and I have to wonder if it is neccesarry to do that… we get that you guys do not like it.
But right now, it seems that if I put a post or comment about how beautiful the twilight was on my holiday last year, I can almost be guaranteed that I get some or other “witty” remark about sparkling vampires…

The problem is that ever since the advent of twilight, vampires became all the rage and Stephanie Meyer’s works are definitely the elephant in the room meaning that it tends to get mentioned and compared a lot. Its the price of fame,I guess.
I will personally try to tone down some of my vitriol, but I cannot pretend to ignore its cinematic shortcomings.

Cinematic shortcomings…  Hmmm.   Please elaborate on that a bit if you do not mind?  My question is, when going into a movie like Twilight, what is that you expect?  Surely you are not expecting something akin to the King’s Speech, for example?

My 2 cents – I’d watch Breaking Dawn Part 2 in a heartbeat over Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The latter looks like the epitome of soulless style over substance, and I’m kinda over that approach. It doesn’t even look fun.

There is no way on this planet that I am going to miss Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter… it’s not going to be good at all but it’s just one of those that has to be seen.. like attack of the killer tomatoes and giant piranha.. the last of which is easily the worst movie ever made

I don’t have a problem with bad movies that have a sense of humour about their awfulness. They can be a lot of fun. This, however, looks too serious and try-hard “badass” for its own good.

Yeah that’s a good point… I can’t really believe they are taking it seriously though, it’s the second most ludicrous story I’ve heard this year after the space nazi’s
