When I was in school, words were everything. And not just words, sentence structure, grammar and spelling were all very important. So was my handwriting, because the teachers couldn’t read those said words if I didn’t work on it, but you get the picture – words were important. Today though, it seems people can express everything just through a simply picture or emoticon (or emoji as they are now called) on their messaging app. And while you can marvel at the simplicity of it all, I still miss all those words.

However, it seems I am stuck in the stone age because the world loves communicating in emojis and so much so, that they are now making an entire movie out of them. If only there was an emoji to describe how I feel about this idea… Oh wait, there is:

As rudimentary as it does sound, Sony Pictures Animation has been working on an idea to bring the different emoji’s to life for over a year. You would think during that time Sony would’ve come to their senses, but it seems they are still intent on providing an even greater meaning behind those little smiley faces and thumbs up that you use every day, in a film titled Emojimovie: Express Yourself (isn’t putting a name behind the movie rather than an emoji a little redundant). And we now have our first look of what to expect with the below screenshot:

And so not only are we introduced to the bright colours and look of the film. But also what will be the main characters that we will be getting in the movie. If your favourite emoji didn’t make the cut, I’m sorry. I’m sure you can express it with an emoji in the comments below.

The studio looks to be going for a really fun approach to the film having so far as they’ve now also added some comedians into the mix to provide their voices to the film, in the form of Ilana Glazer and James Corden to go alongside T.J Miller who is set to star.

In a film that can best be described as a mix between Wreck-It Ralph and  Inside Out the story is about a trio of emojis on an “app-venture” to save their world. Yes, prepare for loads of jokes and one-liners such as that one.

And while its clear who the heroes in this movie are intended to be in the picture, I’m not so sure what the poop emoji is supposed to represent. The villain of the movie or a reflection of the overall idea for the movie in the first place. I’m going with both at the moment, though to be fair, the official synopsis of the film actually sounds quite inventive and seems like there is a lot of thought that was put into the characters and story.

EMOJIMOVIE: EXPRESS YOURSELF unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

According to /Film, the film’s director Anthony Leondis has gone on to describe the new characters, Hi-5 as “a high-five emoji who is a highly motivated, and highly dramatic, hand on a mission (sorry).” And Jailbreak as a rebel ‘break all the codes’ computer programmer emoji” who will “make girls really feel the empowered ‘nobody’s gonna keep me in a cage’ attitude this character.

I didn’t even know a computer programmer emoji such as this even existed. So I guess this movie might be classified as educational for me as well.

I dread the day when a site such as ours will be posting reviews of movies simply by providing an emoji of how they found the experience. If that’s the case, I may need to brush up on my emoji speak. So, if any of my friends reading this get a strange message of me featuring a series of weird emoji’s. Be patient, I’m simply practicing to express myself in this manner. So far, this movie has me thinking the following of Hollywood:

Emojimovie: Express Yourself is schedule to release on August 11, 2017. And I wouldn’t be surprised if a tie-in app that will make all your emojis look like the characters in the film is ready for install around the same time.

Sadly I fear you’re right. Or a movie filmed entirely as a selfie…
