I have to say I don’t get excited for movies the way I used to. Take for example Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element. When I stepped into the cinema back in 1997, I was literally shaking in anticipation. And you know what? I wasn’t disappointed. Add on almost 20 years (WHAT?!) and things have changed. I am old, cynical and have probably seen Trevor chew on his soft toys way too many times. I am jaded in other words. However, there is a small glimmer of hope in my rusted, calloused heart and that is next year’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Title issues aside (It’s too long! SEO already hates you!) it looks like it may be the next best thing to space opera that doesn’t have a certain God-like Mouse involved, and it’s written, directed and produced by Fifth Element‘s Luc Besson!

Okay, that doesn’t really mean anything after Lucy, but he has proven he is more than capable with space themes and with this movie he is certainly going big (please don’t fail!) So what’s it all about? Here’s the premise:

Two special operatives (Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne) embark on a mission to the intergalactic city of Alpha where unseen forces pose a threat to humanity.

Well… That’s a whole load to go on! Still, here are some rather nice new images showing off one of the film’s apparent thousands of alien races, as well as a new look at DeHaan and Delevingne, and a new teaser poster for you to get excited about! Trevor, put that soft toy down NOW!

So what do you think? Not bad looking at all hey? Valérian and Laureline was a French comic book series that was first published in 1967 so I get why Besson took to it. And it looks nice, very nice. Then again Besson NEVER makes bad looking movies, just sometimes very odd ones.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets also stars Clive Owen and Rihanna and you can expect to have your eyeballs melt on 21 July, 2017.

  1. There’s a certain irony to you being jaded.
