I really do enjoy my ‘based on a true story’ movies – the Oscars seem to as well – so this first full trailer of Hidden Figures had me rather interested. It’s based on the ‘untold’ story of story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), three African-American women in the 1960’s who managed to cross both the gender and racial line to send America’s first man into space. I had never heard of them so a story about their work in NASA and the issues they must have faced intrigued me. However, the trailer really looks so bogged down in sentimentality that I fear it won’t do these women justice. Here’s the official synopsis:

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

That does sound awesome, what worries me though is the banter between the main character. I honestly cannot imagine this happening, as it seems to smack of nostalgia for a past that has been painted to look a little more digestible than what it really was. Hell, maybe I AM too cynical. Have a watch and see what you think.

That is a rather damn fine ensemble if you ask me (I love you Octavia!) that is sure to leave a warm fuzzy feeling somewhere in your chest cavity area. Directed by Theodore Melfi (St Vincent) and co-starring Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons I am sure it will be spot on with ever detail (stop it Nick!).

Expect Hidden Figures to launch 13 January, 2017.
