The first trailer and poster for Venom are here!

This is it, folks. The moment you’ve been waiting for. After months and months of… well, nothing really except random pictures of Tom Hardy on a film set just looking how Tom Hardy would look on a film set, we finally have our first official look at Sony’s Venom solo movie thanks to the trailer and poster that just got released. Check it out below!

Well, that’s… actually just a whole lot of more of the same we’ve seen thus far. Which is basically nothing. To be fair, I didn’t expect to get a full shot of Hardy all CGI’d up as Venom as the film has literally just finished shooting last month. It’s far too early for the level of VFX that would be required to show off a hulking black monster that’s mostly teeth and tongue. Of the little bit that’s there though, I am intrigued. Cautious and not getting hopeful, but intrigued.

The shots we get tell us very little, but based on those crumbs I’m willing to bet that the story here will bypass Spider-Man’s part in its comic book origin – he found the alien symbiote on a distant planet and thought it was some kind of semi-sentient costume which he brought back to Earth – by rather taking a cue from the Ultimate Spider-Man version of the story. In that alternate take, the symbiote is a “suit” cooked up in a lab designed to help cure cancer, but which drives its wearer insane while granting immense physical abilities. That certainly appears to be what’s happening in that teaser trailer.

As for the movie itself, let’s be honest here: the moment it was announced that Sony was developing a movie built around a Spider-Man villain but which would not actually have anything to do with Spider-Man, most of us thought the same thing: Here we go again. With the exception of finally striking a co-production deal with Marvel to bring ol’ Web-head into the MCU, Sony has a terrible track record of Spider-Man related creative decisions.

One of those terrible decisions resulted in Spider-Man 3, the utterly terrible movie that killed one of the biggest franchises of the time (oh don’t worry, it got revived just so that it could be killed again with more bad decisions) and also gave the world its first look at a cinematic version of Venom. If there was any good that came from Topher Grace’s laughable portrayal as the symbiotic villain in that film, it was that Sony had already hit rock bottom to begin with.

This basically means that all Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) has to do here is vault the really low bar set for the character previously and they would already make some people happy. But on the other hand, if this turns out to be the terrible decision it potentially looks like on paper, then Sony should really just hurry the hell up and make those rumours of them selling their properties a reality.

That being said though, you can’t ignore the fact that Hardy is a phenomenal actor and the rest of the cast are equally as talented. On top of that, Venom was written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, the same duo who just somehow managed to turn another terrible-sounding idea in a Jumanji sequel into one of my favourite movies of last year and the third most successful movie of all time for Sony. So for now this is getting the benefit of the doubt.

Venom is scheduled for release on 5 October, and also stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson and Jenny Slate. Oh and apparently Tom Holland, but just as Peter Parker and not Spider-Man. Are your Bad-Spidey-Decision Senses tingling as well?
