I don’t care what anyone says: Resident Evil is one of my favourite movie franchises – not because they’re particularly good movies, but because they’re very entertaining slices of mindless action. So I’m very happy to see the franchise returning to the big screen, albeit for the last time, in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

For those of you who need a quick refresher about what happened in the previous movie – because we all know understanding the plot is incredibly important to enjoying these movies – let me give you the highlights:

The recently de-powered Alice was captured by a brainwashed Jill Valentine and taken to a massive underground Umbrella base run by a supercomputer called the Red Queen, which was still running T-Virus experiments in simulated environments. Alice then has to escape from the facility –  and I’m assuming it’s not a spoiler to say she does, because otherwise the last movie would’ve been the final chapter. At the end of the movie Alice is reinfected with the T-Virus in order for her to regain her powers and fight for the survival of humanity.

And that fight is now, so that’s enough waffling from me; let’s get to the action!

To be honest, I really don’t like this trailer – not because what it shows doesn’t look all Resident Evil-ly, but because it’s just a bad trailer. The Guns N’ Roses theme is a good choice but I’m really not a fan of the rapid, arrhythmic jerky cuts that kick into high gear half way through; and that flickering? Just no.

That aside I really liked what I saw – it looks and feels like a Resident Evil movie. A devastated Raccoon city overrun by zombies and Alice kicking all their of arses, with bonus points for style – that’s exactly what I want from this movie. And am I the only one pleased to see the return of the slicing and dicing laser trap from the first movie?

What do you think?

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is due for release in the US on 27 January 2017. Written and directed once again by Paul W.S. Anderson, it stars Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Ruby Rose, Iain Glen and Shawn Roberts.

I bailed out of this series a couple movies ago, but I will probably check this out purely because a couple of big scenes in the movie was filmed literally right down the road from where I grew up.

Will be interesting to see how Belhar gets adapted as a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Probably didn’t take much.
