Fox in negotiations for an X-MEN live-action TV series

After the massive back to back successes of X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past helped to erase the horrible taste* of Brett Ratner’s X-Men 3 from our cultural palates, the Bryan Singer led mutant franchise just seems to be going from strength to strength on the big screen. But what about the small screen? The X-Men franchise seems absolutely tailor-made for a TV series, right?

Well exactly right actually, as THR found at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour when they spoke to Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden:

“[For] X-Men, we’re in negotiations with Marvel. We’re hopeful we’ll be able to announce something soon. We’re not closed on a deal yet but it’s something we’re definitely pursuing,”

Now it has to be noted at this point that Marvel and Fox have about as good a working relationship with each other as Darryn does with bathing (mental note: We need more air fresheners in the office), as the last few years have seen them cancel the Fantastic Four comic, sideline the X-Men in favour of the Inhumans, and even have classic comic book artwork edited to omit characters whose movie rights are owned by Fox. All of this seems to be an attempt to prevent giving Fox any free exposure for any projects they may have lined up. So maybe, we shouldn’t get our hopes up too early that the two studios will reach an agreement.

Fox clearly have more optimism though, as they have already tapped Star Trek 3 writing duo Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne to pen the script, while 24’s Evan Katz and Manny Coto will serve as showrunners. Walden also went on to explain that their plan is for this to be a “long-running” series, and not a limited event series as has been the trend for several high profile projects like the recent Prison Break and X-Files revivals.

Also according to Walden, should this deal with Marvel go through, it would only see characters that Fox are already in control of being used.

“The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature side so we won’t be including Marvel characters that are at ABC with Disney. This will be exclusively the franchise as it has existed at Fox.”

Whether that means this will see the movie characters existing in the same universe and perhaps even dropping by is unknown right now, but I’m sure a Wolverine cameo would dramatically push up the ratings of any episode.
