It’s been said that French is the language of love. In my case, it’s the language of love of pastries/desserts. Baguette, croissant, petit fours… Ooh la la. Alas, that just about exhausts my knowledge of French words, which is a pity as I would really love to know what is being said in this passionate French (and unfortunately, not subtitled) trailer for Blue Is the Warmest Colour aka La vie d’Adèle in France.

Earlier in the year, the film won the Palme D’Or – the highest honour at the Cannes Film Festival – and has received rave reviews for its unflinching portrayal of one girl’s first love affair with another girl. Now you can check out the first trailer, which is, as with most French things, a little NSFW.

Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a 15-year-old, has no doubt: a girl must date boys. Her life is turned upside down when she meets Emma (Léa Seydoux), a blue-haired young woman, who allows her to discover desire and to assert herself as a woman and an adult. Based on the 2010 French graphic novel “Le Bleu est une couleur chaude” by Julie Maroh.

Blue is the Warmest Colour stars Lea Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos (say that three times fast) and will opening to a limited release on October 15, 2013.

PS: You’ll notice that earlier I said that that “just about exhausts” my French lexicon, and that’s because (thanks to a certain Motown classic) I also know the phrase “Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir”, but as I discovered when I took a trip to France in 2011, that’s not something you say to strangers.
