Gary Oldman is creating a ROBOCOP

Gary Oldman. The man has just about done it all (well, except win an Oscar, the “why” of which is a conundrum that some scientists at a place called CERN are desperately trying to solve). He’s fought alongside Batman, captured spies, hunted down professional killers, protected fabled boy wizards, assassinated presidents (allegedly), composed timeless music, tried to profit from the total destruction of the galaxy and even sucked on Winona Ryder’s neck before turning into a bat.

And now, he’s going to be the creator of Robocop.

According to reports from THR, Oldman has been cast in Jose (Elite Squad) Padhilla’s Robocop remake as “Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.”

This is the first confirmed major departure from Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film. There, the scientists were completely faceless background characters with Robocop’s ex-police partner Lewis really occupying the “torn ideals” position. There’s been no word yet on whether Murphy will be making the cut for this version.

Padhilla already has an exciting young lead actor in The Killing‘s Joel Kinnaman, and with this addition of a talented and season veteran like Oldman (pun not intended), this is really starting to get my interest, despite my natural affinity against reboots.

The film is currently scheduled for a (US) summer 2013 release

[Bonus Round: You can win a gigantic, one of a kind NO-PRIZE if you can list all the Oldman roles I alluded to in the opening praragraph. And no googling!]

But the real ‘torn’ theme is Robocop/Murphy – someone who is both man and machine. On one hand he must serve his creators, on the other he is a person and does what is right. This is one reason why, apart from the antics of Ed-209, there is no real ‘future’ stuff in Robocop other than Robo himself. Verhoeven did this intentionally.

I just had a terrible thought: what if this choice opens the door to put some low-rent muscle-boy in the suit? Are the film makers underestimating how much Peter Weller did for that film?

Then again, maybe ‘torn between sides’ in Hollywood speak means he’s a mopy moral kinda guy who will die somewhere in the first or third act.
