With the exception of Leatherheads – which was just OK – George Clooney has had a hell of a run as an actor/director thus far, with all four his other films being huge critical successes. Box office success though hasn’t been that easy to come by. Good Night, and Good Luck made a pretty profit, but that was mainly due to its ridiculously low production budget of just $7 million. But somehow I get the feeling that his next film, Monuments Men, might just be the one to make him lots of money.

You know, besides the mountains of money he already has. And now I’m depressed.

Monument Men’s true story premise of a group of art historians who were assembled by the American military during the final days of WW2 to sneak behind enemy lines and steal back priceless art treasures stolen by the Nazi’s, is already something to get most but the most jaded audience members interested, but throw in an all star cast, and you might just have a sure thing.

So stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A Casino thief, a super-spy, a ghostbuster, a mute Frenchman, an elf queen and a caveman walk into a WW2 Nazi stronghold to steal back some priceless art treasures…

Yep, joining Clooney in the cast will be Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Cate Blanchett and John Goodman. Also joining the group of A-listers will be “Downton Abbey” star Hugh Bonneville and veteran character actor Bob Balaban.

Clooney co-wrote the script – based on Robert M Edsel’s book,  “Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves And The Greatest Treasure Hunt In History” – which will see him take the role of George Stout an army officer with a background in art conservation, who puts together this crack team of art historians and museum curators, while Blanchett will play Rose Valland, a French Resistance fighter with art knowledge who assists them (Please tell me one of the pieces she helps them find is the painting of “The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies”.

The roles for the rest of the cast is unknown at this point, but this is already shaping up into a rather good looking project, sort of like The Dirty Dozen, but just with less criminals and more serious cardigans.

Filming is expected to start in Europe in March 2013, while our exuberant excitement for this film starts now.
