George Lucas calls it a day with Star Wars and Lucasfilm

Say what you like about George Lucas, but the big man has generated massive amounts of cash from his Star Wars Galactic Empire, thanks to some business savvy and forethought.

The man isn’t all Star Wars however. He happens to regard himself as a filmmaker first and foremost, roots with which he would like to return to. And that’s just what he plans to do, as the old Jedi has decided to finish up at his company, Lucasfilm.Lucas has been keen to get back behind a camera and film some smaller projects, ever since he wrapped up work on the Star Wars Prequel trilogy. He did just that with Red Tails, a humdrum look at the iconic World War 2 fighter squadron, the Tuskegee Airmen.

But he’s ready to make the final leap now. Speaking to Empire magazine, Lucas revealed his future plans;

I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies.
I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.

I doubt that Lucas will ever be completely done with Star Wars, but if he does decide to spend more time on personal projects, and less time fiddling around at the Skywalker Ranch, then good for him.

He’ll finally get to make small movies that interest him, and we’ll hopefully get less fiddling applied to some of our favourite films, as well as plans for a fifth Indiana Jones film being scrapped then.

Win win!

    He has the world’s strangest neck…

    Lucas is not much of a director. Rather, he hasn’t done a lot. Apart from the first Star Wars, the only movies of note – and that weren’t bad – were American Graffiti and THX 1138, though even those are a matter for debate. Even judging from early Star Wars concepts, it is clear that Lucas’ ability depends a lot on the people he surrounds himself with. He knows the technical stuff, but does he have the ability to put soul in his films? This is foremost what separates him from someone like Spielberg, who can pull every cliché out of the closet and still forge a great experience.
