Get back in the saddle with the trailer for MAGIC MIKE XXL

Confession time: I really enjoyed Magic Mike. The movie may have put off some folks with all the beefcake dude-ity and bumpin’ and grindin’, but once you got past those topless theatrics you actually found a surprisingly solid character drama that was occasionally kind of fun. The biggest surprise (that was not in somebody’s shorts)? Channing Tatum. Not only did ol’ Charming Potato actually get to finally put those Step Up dance skills to use, but director Steven Soderbergh managed to coax some real acting talent out of him that has luckily stuck around ever since.

What’s more, Magic Mike was actually a biopic of sorts for Mr. Tatum, as he actually used his own pre-movie stardom experiences as a male stripper for the movie (Alex Pettyfer’s character The Kid is essentially a young Tatum). And now he’s back with the sequel, the gigantically titled Magic Mike XXL, to share some more memories of dancing with power tools and wiping your crotch on eager ladies. And based on this first trailer, it looks like it could be toning down the seriousness slightly and upping the self-aware fun factor – with some extra Tatum goofy charm thrown in for good measure, of course – which all sounds pretty good to me. And probably looks very good to others.

Three years after he retired from stripping, Mike (Channing Tatum) reunites with the rest of the Kings of Tampa for a blowout final performance in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Soderbergh has vacated the director’s chair on this sequel to make room for Greg Jacobs, who was actually Soderbergh’s first assistant director on the first film. However, Soderbergh will still be behind the camera on this one, as he actually stayed on to be the film’s DP.

Magic Mike XXL also stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, Andie Macdowell, Amber Heard, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jane McNeill, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover and Michael Strahan. It is scheduled to take to the stage on July 3, 2015.

  1. Why? Did the first one do that well? And was it any good? I never bothered to watch it

It was actually pretty good, it’s worth watching. The guy can dance too.

Ok, well got it on Blu-ray. Wife has been begging me to watch it with her so I guess I’ll do it. Just never seemed like the type of movie that would appeal to me.

EDIT: But I think I’ll make her watch Guardians of the Galaxy first 😛

It did really well. Made just shy of $170 million off a budget of just $7 million. And as for critcally, last time I checked it was sitting on about 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I’ll take the plunge and watch it with my wife then. Never really looked like my type of movie but 80% isn’t a bad score. Considering some of my favorite movies sit on scores of 40% or less. Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t appreciate a good action movie when that’s all you want

Well, look this is straight serious character drama, with the occasional bit of humour and dudes taking off their clothes all sexy-like. If that dissuades you, I will also add that Olivia Munn is topless in the first 10 mins of the movie.
