Ghost Rider co-director Brian Taylor to make a Twisted Metal film

Everybody has a fetish, some more pronounced and weirder than others. (For the record, those pics of me and that tea cosy were photoshopped). For director Brian Taylor, that fetish is apparently people whose heads are on fire. He co-directed the upcoming Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and will now also be helming a film adaptation of popular video game, Twisted Metal which features an ice-cream van driving, homicidal clown with a flaming head named Sweet Tooth. Yeah, video games aren’t weird at all.

Deadline is reporting that for this project Taylor will be ditching his frequent collaborator,Mark Neveldine – with which he co-directed the Crank films, Gamer and the soon-to-be-released Ghost Rider sequel – to write and direct the videogame adaptation on his own. If he does end up missing his bromantic directorial partner, he can dry his man-tears with all the dollar bills from the 7 figure deal he just inked with Sony to do the film.

According to the article “… the film will revolve around an underground event that pits a number of combatants in a fight to the death. They are outfitted in armored weaponized cars that are pimped out with heavy weaponry that includes missiles and machine guns. Some drop mines or launch electrical charges.”

Weaponized cars? Machine guns? That’s pretty much par for the course for Taylor, whose bombastic directorial style lends itself more to copious amounts of violence than dramatic nuance. Unfortunately for him, the article then reads further with the following:

“The proprietor of the race is Calypso, a string-puller dedicated to examining the human condition, such as what makes a peaceful man violent, what terrifies a violent man and who will make a Faustian bargain in which they risk their lives. The sole survivor will get any wish granted”

Examining the human condition? Faustian bargains? Mr Taylor, you’re going to have your work cut out for you it seems.

In some shrewd marketing tactics, this announcement has come on the same day that the latest installment in the immensely popular series is being released on Sony’s Playstation 3.
