There’s a certain charm to hand-drawn animated films, that computer-generated kids films will never truly capture. That long process of individually animating characters and scenarios may be less attractive to big name studios looking to capitalise on the 3D effect with a gimmicky CGI experience, but the style is always striking. Ernest and Celine is one such film with retro workmanship and charm, and it’s coming out soon.

In France. Dammit!

Based on the books and their illustrations by Gabrielle Vincent, Ernest and Celestine tells the tale of the unlikely friendship between a bear and mouse. And maybe something more.

Come on people, I failed French class when I couldn’t remember the phrase for a grilled cheese omelette. So ignore the dialogue, and immerse yourself in the lively, wonderful animation instead, and keep an eye out for Ernest and Celestine to arrive on DVD shelves sometime, next year presumably.

Fantastic – the French have done it again! It’s almost a crime how under-appreciated French animation is among even fans of the medium.

It was Disney’s animated Tarzan that got me paying attention to the Gallic animators and they really do some of the finest work on the planet.
