Godzilla can beat many things, but it seems one of the things it may not want to take on are Transformers. At least that is one of the speculative reasons for the latest announcement that sees the Godzilla sequel (currently creatively titled Godzilla 2) move out by 9 months from June 8, 2018, to March 22, 2019. Currently, it would be competing with a sixth Transformers film slotted for that date (possibly a Bumble-bee spin-off) and the move could’ve been to divert any competition with that franchise which is still popular with fans. Unless those additional 9 months are trying to provide some hints to what the plot will be for the movie… I digress.

To be fair, the move probably has nothing to do with either of those reasons, but could just be allowing them more time for development to make it even better. As we’ve previously heard, they are setting up Godzilla as part of a bigger Kaijuniverse with King Kong and speculatively, some other monster as well. The planned Kong film’s release dates has not changed at this point in time however, with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island still planned for March 10, 2017. Following the Godzilla sequel, we will then have the epic titan match up, Godzilla vs Kong follow on May 29, 2020.

But if you are going to lament about the lack of good monster movie for 2018 now, fear not as Legendary and Universal Pictures‘ Pacific Rim 2 is slated to arrive in theaters December 31, 2018, though that is certainly cutting it fine for calling it a 2018 release.

Warner Bros. also slightly shifted the release of one of their mystery DC Comics feature films. Originally set for release on June 19, 2020 (the same date as a mystery Pixar release), the DC film will now arrive on July 24, 2020. It has been speculated that the DC project could perhaps be Green Lantern Corps, but that has not been officially confirmed by the studio. One final addition to the upcoming Warner Bros. schedule places a mystery event film for release on December 25, 2018. There is currently a mystery live-action Disney film set for release that same day. Its obviously too far to bank on these dates, so expect them to potentially change as we hear more details, but its great to see the studios planning their schedules carefully. Lets hope they put that same consideration into the quality of the films on offer too.

What do you think about these new line-up changes? How are you planning to cope with not being able to see another Godzilla film for another 3 years? I loved the first Godzilla film and am looking forward to seeing what director Gareth Edwards can do with the second, now that he will be given an even bigger budget and hopefully more screen-time with the Godzilla character.
