Following the untimely closure of GOG.com on Sunday, the rumour mill has fired up with two very contradictory pieces of information from possibly credible sources.
Gram.pl, formerly associated with CD Projekt claims GOG.com is being bought by Steam:
“Already as we know, GOG.com will continue to operate. It means that it’s current users should not worry about their games. This whole mess is just a marketing stunt aimed to create a buzz in the media before the press conference scheduled for Wednesday.
That being said, the managed to contact our anonymous source close to the GOG staff. What we learned is that service is going to be bought by one of it’s rivals – Steam, to be precise. Please keep in mind that it’s not an official announcement and the advise you to take this information with a grain of salt.
That being said, in a must-take note, That Steam for some time tried to get into the market of retro games, but it’s prices Were not too approachable. Especially for European users who are forced to make their purchases using the Euro. Secondly – what will happen is the “DRM-free” policy after the merger supposed? GOG says on it’s website, the idea behind that will remain unchanged service. Does it mean That despite the purchase, both services will remain separated?”
Naturally, take that with a pinch of salt, however since Gram.pl and CD Projekt were connected, it might hold some water.
On the other end of the scale, Gamestar.de published an article (which was deleted shortly afterwards, view the cached copy here) claiming it has been a PR stunt to generate some buzz before the relaunch, which coincides with it’s second birthday. Except translated by NeoGAF:
“We can now calm you down: As told by Lukasz Kukawski of CD Projekt, Gog.com is not closed. Rather, the message on the homepage of the download service is a publicity stunt. Gog.com will soon celebrate its second anniversary. As a birthday surprise CD project would like to surprise with a new website and special deals. To prepare this Gog.com must be switched off for a few days.”
So, two different sites with some credible sources claiming two completely different things. Perhaps they are linked, but that seems highly unlikely.
